They have a ton of extra materials on the blu rays. From varoious interviews with cast and crew to a lot of the behind the scenes details. It was enjoyable learning that they made Hank a septapus rather than an octopus because he was the most complex creature they ever animated, and doing so nearly crashed the system. So having one less tentacle to animate made him easier to deal with.
My son and I really loved the "computer errors" and the visual glitches. It's short, but has some great glitches where people are turned inside out or upside down. Anyone who has done computer graphics will relate to this.
They even have a short "Emoji" version of Finding Nemo that's cute, telling the whole story of Finding Nemo using emojis...
And a "Fish Schticks" extra is cute too. Animators having a little fun, similar to how they goof off with "outtakes" from some of the pixar movies. But it's not as good as the outtakes though, and I wish they had done them for this.
They even have animations you can leave on the TV as background sets from the movie that your TV will show as if it's a screensaver, until you select back out of it. Think of an aquatic version of the fireplace DVD some people like to use around the holidays.
And, of course, the deleted scenes are always so much fun to see, becuase often they're directions the movie never went, or sometimes they just give a little more background. Some are just black and white outline animations, there's soem black and white outline ones with a bit of color here and there... One is totally finished including the score and lighting (the sleep swimming scene we saw in the first trailer that didn't make it to the movie), and the rest are in between...
Another interesting bit are the various movie intros they did trying to find the right way to start the movie.
The sound is outstanding, and the video quality is awesome upscaled to our 4K TV... Especially the short "Piper" which is just visually stunning.
The 3D looks good as well, despite this not being something you'd normally think of being a huge 3D movie...
If you liked the movie, and have blu ray capability, this is the set to get...
As I watched how the story was portrayed of Dory's memory issues, all I could think about was the paradox that is my boy taking me by the hand and navigating and leading me out of the winding halls of buildings he's never been in before and dragging me to our very nondescript car in a loaded parking lot...and then what it's like to have had to put locks on even the dishes cupboards, because he couldn't remember that every time he threw something glass or ceramic on the floor it would break, and he would end up with cuts. And he would just look at me every single time so confused like, "how on earth did this happen?" Or the lock system we have to have on our door because he can't remember that if he gets hit by a car, he's probably not going to make it out alive.
Like Dory, he lives in a world that finds at least one way every day, usually more, to tell him that it doesn't have a place for him, that he isn't good enough. But the message of this movie for Dory and for my son is that yes, there are places for you and you are good enough, and I think that is a message every special needs kiddo needs to hear over, and over. As my daughter says, it is very meaningful.
Because at the end of the day, I believe in my kid. I'm more aware of anybody the challenges he faces, but as we check off one skill after another that people don't expect him to accomplish because of his disabilities, I just kept telling him "I believe in you. You can do this." And I loved that Dory's parents had basically the same thing to say to her. And it's really great to have that message in some form of entertainment that isn't coming from me. So we loved, loved, loved this movie in this household.
Personally, I think I paid too much money for this. However, I will said that I did get a lot for the money. This includes the 3d Version, Blu-Ray Version, DVD version, a bonus feature disk (the short animated film that played before the movie in the theatres + more), and a digital license to view it anymore. So when I look at it that way, it isn't as overpriced as I generally think and generally provides a good value.
I haven't had a chance to view all versions yet, but seems to be in working proper order. The case itself is generally durable, with the disc holders functioning quite well (I've had many that were simply too lose and couldn't keep the discs in place).
Now for the movie itself. If you have seen and liked Finding Nemo, you will like/love this movie. It is a good story, and a heartwarming one at that. It's fun for the kids while being great for adults at the same time. The voice actors are great in this as well. I'd say this is not as funny as the original one goes, and maybe a little less imagination too. But all in all, still a great movie I will have no trouble putting on multiple times and don't think I'll get tired of it.
Good job Disney/Pixar, you have created another masterpiece.
