How to Treat Carpet Stains with Bissell’s Stomp & Go Stain Lifting Pads

baby dealsI live with two messy toddlers, two cats who are prone to vomiting and one sweet shelter dog who doesn’t always like to go outside to relieve herself. Throw in my undeniable clumsiness and I’m pretty sure we have more spills and messes on carpets than the average family.

After getting my carpet professionally cleaned last spring, I learned a few things about how to treat carpet stains:

  • Don’t use sudsy cleansers on carpet. It will take an insane amount of rinses to get all the soapy residue out.
  • Don’t soak any stain with carpet cleaner. Repeated light applications are more effective than one heavy one.
  • Blot, don’t rub or scrub, any stain.
  • If you use a carpet-stain-remover treatment, follow it by saturating the area with boiling hot water and sucking it up with a shop-vac. This mimics the process used by professional carpet cleaners.

Great advice, right? But, let’s face it. I’m a busy mom and “repeated light applications” for cleaning anything isn’t always going to work for me, and some offenders, like pet stains, need to be treated right away.

My friends at Mom Central sent me a few packs of the new Bissell Stomp & Go stain lifting pads to try out. As someone who has more than a few permanant stains on her carpet, I was a bit skeptical of the package’s statement that the pad “permanently removes tough stains.”

I know tough stains, and I had the perfect one in mind to test the stain on:baby deals

This is a small, dry spot of cranberry juice that was caused from an abandoned, leaky sippy cup. The stain was about 2 weeks old when I tried to treat it with the stain lifting pad:

The absolute best thing about the Bissell Stomp & Go stain lifting pads is their ease of use and convenience. Most of the time, I spray a stain with a stain remover in a squirt bottle. Then I wait 5 minutes and come back with my damp cloth to blot the stain and see if the process needs to be repeated.

My old stain-removing procedure was made more frequent and more inconvenient by having children. I certainly can’t leave a bottle of poisonous stain remover sitting around while I wait for the first application to work. That means I need to spray the stain, put the bottle somewhere safe, blot the stain then go back and get the bottle to reapply more stain-removing spray.

The Bissell Stomp & Go pads remove the “bottle filled with poison” hazard from the process. I still need to keep my kiddos away from the pad while it’s working, but it’s a lot easier to put the pad down on the carpet and keep all of us away from the spot for a while while the pad does its magic!

Wondering how the pad worked?

Here’s the after shot of the area that had a set-in cranberry juice stain:baby deals

Pretty impressive, right?

Since I’m ever the bargain shopper, I can’t help but mention that there are a few ways for you to get a deal on Bissell Stomp & Go stain lifting pads:

How to Keep Your Dishwasher Smelling Fresh? Use Affresh!

baby deals

A few years ago, I used the last of a small jar of minced garlic in a dish I was making for dinner. The tiny, 4-oz glass jar was so cute, I thought I would be able to repurpose it for something. Not thinking much of it, I rinsed it out and tossed it in the dishwasher.

When the dishwasher ran that night, I noticed a strong smell of garlic still hanging in the air. Thinking it would dissipate as the cycle completed, I didn’t give it another thought. The next day, I came home from work went to empty the dishwasher. Upon opening the door, I was overwhelmed with the odor of garlic that filled my kitchen. After inspecting several dishes, I realized that the garlic smell had permeated everything in the load.

I took the clean garlic jar out, promptly recycled it, and set to work figuring out how to deodorize my dishwasher. After a few extra-hot loads with added lemon juice, the contents of the dishwasher were finally in a usable condition. My dishwasher, however, was in bad shape. I ran empty load after empty load with supposed odor-fighters like vinegar, baking soda and lemon juice. Each time, the smell was better, but it wasn’t gone.

Finally, after dumping an entire box of baking soda over the bottom of the washer and letting it sit overnight, I started the dishwasher with bleach in the detergent cup. That finally seemed to clear it up, but I cringe when I think about the water, power, and supplies I wasted just because I was dumb enough to wash a container filled with garlic!

I definitely learned my lesson that time; I’ve never, ever put anything odorous in the dishwasher again! If I did, my first order of business would be to use Affresh Dishwasher and Disposal Cleaner to neutralize the smells.

While my dishwasher has never smelled as bad as it did after the garlic incident, it occasionally takes on a stale odor, and there are mineral deposits that should be scrubbed every few months. Running an empty load with an Affresh tablet is all it takes to refresh the appliance and get it looking shiny bright on the inside.

The instructions for Affresh Dishwasher and Disposal Cleaner actually state to use two tablets to clean the dishwasher, but it leaves behind a pretty strong citrus smell (which is FAR better than the previous smells!), so I prefer to just use one. If I ever run into a garlic incident again, I’d definitely throw two in there to try to solve the problem as quickly as possible!

Since I’ve been using Affresh for several weeks, I’ve noticed that I don’t need to worry about mineral deposits. Affresh keeps me from having to scrub the inside nooks and crannies of my dishwasher. I love that!

I’ve mentioned before that I also use Affresh to make my garbage disposal not smell. I’ve found that Affresh by Whirlpool is a great product to keep both dishwashers and disposals smelling clean and running properly!

Where Can I Buy Affresh Dishwasher & Disposal Cleaner Tablets?

Affresh is avaialble at retailers nationwide, including Sears, Best Buy, Lowe’s, Kroger and Food Lion, and at www.affresh.com. A pack of 6 tablets has a suggested retail price of $6.99.

Affresh Tablets :: How to Make Your Garbage Disposal Not Smell

baby deals

Before I was a homeowner, I longed for a sweet apartment that came complete with a washing machine, dishwasher and garbage disposal.

As it turned out, I had to wait until my husband and I bought our own home and remodeled our kitchen to get a dishwasher and garbage disposal into my life. The dishwasher and I were instantly best friends, but it took a lot longer to fully “get” how to live with my garbage disposal.

I’m the keeper of the kitchen in our home, but I had never lived anywhere with a garbage disposal. I figured that all food waste could go down the drain, and the disposal would, well dispose of it.

A few weeks into that operation, I walked into my kitchen and realized I’d have to play my least favorite game: Find the Smell. Believe it or not, my kitchen is relatively clean, so I couldn’t figure out where the rotting, horrible odor was coming from. After taking out the garbage and inspecting all of our major appliances, I realized that the smell was coming from the drain. It was then that I realized that there was likely some raw chicken stuck in the disposal from a few days earlier. As Minnesota Moms say: ICK!

I didn’t know how to make my garbage disposal stop smelling, but I do know that running hot, soapy water through the disposal only made a hot, steamy stink. I was super-close to pouring bleach down the drain, but my husband stopped me before any permanent damage was done! A Google search finally told me to pour in baking soda, followed by vinegar. Then I had to let it sit for an our. Then I had to follow it with boiling water. Then I had to throw in some fresh citrus peels to cover up any remaining odors. Hours later, the smell was (mostly) gone, I was done putting meat in the disposal forever, and I was hoping to uncover a better way get smells out of my garbage disposal!

The entire population of people who own garbage disposals should rejoice that Whirlpool now makes a product called Affresh, which is made to clean your garbage disposal and dishwasher!

When I received my package of Affresh, I didn’t think my garbage disposal really needed to be cleaned. However, the information I received with the package told me that residue that builds up in my garbage disposal can cause odors. Of course, I had to see it to believe it, so I took the trap out of the drain and peered down into the disposal basket. Residue was right! I never realized that there could be so much buildup in a space that regularly has soapy water running through it!

Using the Affresh tablets to make your garbage disposal not smell: One thing is for sure; while using the Affresh tablets requires about 30 minutes of not using the sink, it’s a lot faster than the process I was using before! All I had to do was drop in a tablet, turn on the disposal, and run hot water through it for 15 seconds. After that, I just turned off the water and the garbage disposal, then waited 30 minutes. A quick flush of hot water down the drain was all that was needed to complete the process.

I’m “test driving” Affresh tablets, so I’ll be monitoring my disposal to see if it operates better now that it’s fresh and clean!

Low Sodium Corn & Black Bean Salsa Recipe with Mrs. Dash Seasonings!

baby deals

You may remember from previous posts that I’m a Mrs. Dash Ambassador, which means I’ve been able to try out a bunch of Mrs. Dash seasonings, all well reducing my own sodium intake. I love that the perk of being this type of brand ambassador means that I’m doing a little bit to improve my own health!

I’ve had lots of fun looking at all the recipes on the Mrs. Dash Facebook page, but this time I wanted to put a spin on one of my own favorite dishes.

It’s been super, extra hot in Minnesota this week, and the last thing I’ve wanted to do is turn on my oven. Thankfully, I have a whole list of no-cook recipes in my arsenal, and the recent high temps have been forcing me to use them. One of my favorite foods to make is homemade salsa. I’m not talking about the saucy, tomato-based kind that you dunk chips in. I’m talking about the fresh, chunky, version that you can do almost anything with!

My usual recipe calls for a whole pile of salt, but I realized that there were a few Mrs. Dash seasonings that would work really well to add great flavor to the salsa without increasing the sodium. After considering my selection, I decided that there were three that could possibly work well in salsa.

baby deals

I pulled out the Southwest Chipotle, Fiesta Lime and Extra Spicy varieties and decided to give them each a taste test to decide which would be best in my salsa. The Extra Spicy variety had a lot of heat, but I thought the flavor of the dried pepper flakes was too much. The Southwest Chipotle was delicious, but a bit too smoky for the overall flavor I was going for. The Fiesta Lime was perfect! The ingredients include cayenne and cumin, which would add a little bit of spice and a lot of the southwest flavor I wanted to achieve! The basics of this extra chunky, fresh salsa are incredibly simple.

Here’s what you need:1 can black beans, drained and rinsedFresh cilantro, chopped (at least 1 Tablespoon)1 can of corn, drained and rinsed1 Tablespoon extra-virgin olive oilMy usual recipe involves dumping the corn and black beans in a bowl like this:

baby deals

Toss them gently together, and add the cilantro and olive oil, plus any other ingredients you want. Sometimes I’ll add fresh tomatoes, onions, garlic and lime juice. Other times I’ll throw in cucumbers and feta cheese. I’ll always add black pepper and a few heavy dashes of salt. But not this time!

This time, instead of adding any of those extra add-ins, I mixed in about 1/2 a Tablespoon of Mrs. Dash Fiesta Lime seasoning, and I skipped the salt and pepper entirely.

After letting the bowl full of goodness sit covered in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes, I opened it up and gave it a try. Yum! It was so fresh and light, I wanted to have another spoonful!

There are so many different ways to eat the corn and black bean salsa. Sometimes it really can be eaten as a salad, but I think all the delicious extra flavors the Mrs. Dash Fiesta Lime seasoning added to the concoction made it more likely to be an accompaniment to a main dish. Here are some great ways to eat this salsa:

  • Fill a tortilla with meat, black bean & corn salsa, a sprinkle of cheese and a dollop of sour cream.
  • Put the salsa on top of a grilled chicken breast.
  • top individual tostadas with the salad, some extra cilantro and a little bit of sour cream.

The possibilities are endless! This is one of the best-tasting recipes I’ve made with my Mrs. Dash seasonings, and I’ll definitely be making it again!

Making the Best Father’s Day with Electronics From Dad’s Wish List

Why is it that all dads seem to be fascinated by all things technology-related? Give my husband anything with a digital screen or a memory card and I can guarantee that he’ll immediately be interested in it. I can always tell if it’s a really good item if my husband calls his dad to talk about it!

Haiden, Piper and I recently headed to WalMart to see if we could find any electronic items that would suit James, my husband. Of course, I knew that we’d find a plethora of products he’d love, but I was definitely interested in seeing what they had to offer. You might be surprised to know that WalMart‘s electronic department carries some of the trendiest and most-wanted gadgets around!

Here are a few things I know James would go gaga for:

This is a no-brainer. What dad doesn’t want an iPad? I just want to share, however, that I had no idea that WalMart even carried iPads! What a pleasant surprise to see their brightly-lit display cases and prominent signs announcing that they were authorized Apple resellers. Even better, there was a nice selection of accessories and iPad gear so I could come home with everything I needed for my husband to start using his brand new iPad right away.

My husband is a movie buff. He’ll give any movie a chance, including all those romantic comedies and ridiculous Will Ferrell flicks I tend to gravitate to! He’s be thrilled if he could upgrade our standard DVD player to a Blu-Ray player. Not only could he start watching all his favorites in high-definition, he could also stream Netflix movies without having to haul his laptop around the house and hook it up.

Of course,  there are a few things that I want James to have that he probably doesn’t even know he wants! Here are my thoughts for gifts that would surprise him:

James is always driving himself crazy with not being able to find his iPod charger. Plus, he’s always downloading songs he wants me to hear, and the tinny little speaker on his iPod Touch makes me not want to listen to the songs at all! Getting a quality iHome speaker/charger combo would make him very happy.

My husband isn’t an avid reader, but he does pick up books from time to time. He also has downtime during his day where an e-reader would come in handy. The Kindle is supposed to be the top-notch electronic reading device, and I think he’d feel much more awesome reading any book on a Kindle!

That’s just a small sample of the electronic items I’d love to give my husband for Father’s Day!

Now, my dad is also a gadget-lover, but his tech-desires are much more low-key. In fact, the greatest electronic gift I ever gave him was just this last year: I gifted my dad with a cell phone of his very own!

Dad had previously carried a cell for work, but he turned it in when he stopped working. After a stretch of time hearing him talk about how much he wanted a phone, I found a great deal and got one for him. It was really funny when I called him a few weeks after giving him the phone and he said I was the first person to call him on it!

I admit, I have yet to buy a Father’s Day gift for my dad this year, but I’m sure it will be something gadgety that he’ll be thrilled to receive.

Happy Father’s Day!

Potty-Training Helps :: Cottonelle Flushable Moist Wipes

baby deals

I’ve written a few times about potty-training Piper. Sometimes I can’t believe that she’s not even two and she’s completely out of diapers! One thing that comes with potty-training under two is that my method of communication may not exactly mesh with hers. Throw in a bit of her independent spirit and I need to work pretty hard to make sure we don’t end up with an, ahem, messy situation!

One area that has become pretty challenging is “wiping.” Piper has become adamant that she does everything in the potty process.  She gets undressed, sits on the potty, then gets up and puts her clothing back on. She doesn’t want me to have any part in it (except for dumping out the dirty potty chair, of course!). Since her potty seat is in the living room, my habit has been to wipe her quickly, then take the dirty toilet tissue and bring it with me when I clean out the potty. Since she’s an independent toddler, I don’t get to have a role in cleaning her up, now, either! I wanted to make sure her bottom was completely clean after she used the potty, but an almost-two-year-old and toilet tissue just don’t work well together.

The solution? Cottonelle Flushable Moist Wipes. I’ve found that Piper understands that Cottonelle moist wipes are for cleaning, so she works very hard to wipe everywhere after she uses the potty when she has a Cottonelle wipe in her hand. She then knows that the wipe can go right in the potty and I’ll take the whole package to the toilet to dump it all out together.

Cottonelle Flushable Moist Wipes come with a convenient dispenser that attaches to the wall just above your toilet paper roll. The mounting uses 3M’s CommandLine hooks, so there’s no drilling or nailing into your wall during installation! We haven’t used the dispenser yet, since the pack of Cottonelle Wipes resides next to the potty seat, but you can bet I’ll be installing it as soon as our kiddos graduate to our full-size toilet!

Interesting in trying them?  Head over to the Cottonelle Get Fresh With a Friend site! You can enter your info for a $1 off coupon and sign a friend up to get one as well.
