Why I’m Trying to Be a Healthy Mom

baby dealsPeople try to be healthy for a variety of reasons. Some want to look better, some want to have a better body image. Some people have ideals of how healthy eating reflects a healthy personal environment. Other’s know that their family history is working against them. Whatever the reason, working to be a healthier person is a good thing!

My own personal reason for trying to be healthy actually has a three-part answer:

  1. My family history has heart disease all over it. Both my maternal and paternal history point to heart disease in multiple family members. Other relatives who are about my age are seeing signs of high cholesterol and high blood pressure. While I’m thrilled to say that all my doctor’s reports show that I’m healthy, there’s absolutely no reason to be preventative. That’s why I try to keep my fat and cholesterol intake low.
  2. I need to be there for my family. I have two precious children and one amazing husband who I can’t imagine leaving behind if something ever were to happen to me. Further, both my parents are alive and well, and I’m close to both my siblings. Plus, I’m an Auntie to some very special neices and nephews. I can hardly think about losing one of them, and I know they feel the same way about me. I can’t control their lifestyles, but I think about everything they would miss and it’s a huge motivator to do everything in my power to stick around as long as possible.
  3. I want to maintain my body. It feels pretty selfish to even include staying thin as a reason to be healthy, but, it would be dishonest to leave it out. After two c-sections in a 12-month period, there are parts of my midsection that won’t go back to “normal.” However, there are plenty of other areas where I can make a difference, and being healthy is the only way to maintain a positive body image for myself.
I’m staying healthy by getting out and walking as much as possible, plus working on portion control and scheduling meals. One way I’m eating healthy is with Marie Callender’s Under 500 Calorie meals. I think frozen meals are the best way for me t0 indulge in foods that are otherwise off-limits. Ordering any sort of pasta with cream sauce in a restaurant is always going to be way more  fat and calories than I need, and I prefer to keep heavy cream off my grocery list. Eating a Marie Callender’s meal that’s under 500 calories is a great way to keep my overall diet in check.
Marie Callender’s has 34 different frozen entrees that provide a tasty, satisfying meal of 500 calories or less! With over 30 choices of meals, I’m pretty sure you’ll find something you like.

How Do You Control Portion Size? I Use Smaller Plates!

baby dealsI always feel the challenge of healthy eating. Whether it’s making the right choice for what order at a restaurant or deciding what to make for dinner, it’s not always easy to make the right choices for eating the best food.

As I continue to learn more and more about healthy and unhealthy eating habits, I have to say that sometimes it’s not an issue of choosing what to eat, it’s making sure I don’t eat too much of anything, even the healthy stuff!

One of the easiest ways I’ve found to control the amounts I eat is actually a mind game I play on myself. If I’m serving up something I know I shouldn’t over-indulge on, I use a smaller dish. Call me crazy, but Cornell University studied this portion control method and it works!

I keep it really simple: If I want ice cream, I don’t use a cereal bowl, where I can easily add three scoops, I serve it in a small ramekin that only holds a half a cup. If I’m eating a rich dinner with a creamy, high fat sauce, I eat it off of an appetizer plate rather than a dinner plate. Trust me, I still get a good-size serving and it keeps me from overdoing it.

Along the same lines, frozen meals are an excellent way to keep portions controlled. I tried Marie Callender’s Grilled Chicken Alfredo Bake this week, and it was great to glance at the nutrition information and see all of the calories, fat and other attributes all listed for the one serving the package contained. It even had the calorie count on the front to give me a quick check on what I was eating.

I think frozen meals are the best way for me to get a pasta “fix” without over-indulging. Ordering any sort of pasta with cream sauce in a restaurant is always going to be way more food, fat, and calories than I need, and I prefer to keep heavy cream off my grocery list most of the time. Eating the Marie Callender’s meal was a great way to have a good serving of pasta and cream sauce without worrying about taking in too many calories.

How to Keep Your Dishwasher Smelling Fresh? Use Affresh!

baby deals

A few years ago, I used the last of a small jar of minced garlic in a dish I was making for dinner. The tiny, 4-oz glass jar was so cute, I thought I would be able to repurpose it for something. Not thinking much of it, I rinsed it out and tossed it in the dishwasher.

When the dishwasher ran that night, I noticed a strong smell of garlic still hanging in the air. Thinking it would dissipate as the cycle completed, I didn’t give it another thought. The next day, I came home from work went to empty the dishwasher. Upon opening the door, I was overwhelmed with the odor of garlic that filled my kitchen. After inspecting several dishes, I realized that the garlic smell had permeated everything in the load.

I took the clean garlic jar out, promptly recycled it, and set to work figuring out how to deodorize my dishwasher. After a few extra-hot loads with added lemon juice, the contents of the dishwasher were finally in a usable condition. My dishwasher, however, was in bad shape. I ran empty load after empty load with supposed odor-fighters like vinegar, baking soda and lemon juice. Each time, the smell was better, but it wasn’t gone.

Finally, after dumping an entire box of baking soda over the bottom of the washer and letting it sit overnight, I started the dishwasher with bleach in the detergent cup. That finally seemed to clear it up, but I cringe when I think about the water, power, and supplies I wasted just because I was dumb enough to wash a container filled with garlic!

I definitely learned my lesson that time; I’ve never, ever put anything odorous in the dishwasher again! If I did, my first order of business would be to use Affresh Dishwasher and Disposal Cleaner to neutralize the smells.

While my dishwasher has never smelled as bad as it did after the garlic incident, it occasionally takes on a stale odor, and there are mineral deposits that should be scrubbed every few months. Running an empty load with an Affresh tablet is all it takes to refresh the appliance and get it looking shiny bright on the inside.

The instructions for Affresh Dishwasher and Disposal Cleaner actually state to use two tablets to clean the dishwasher, but it leaves behind a pretty strong citrus smell (which is FAR better than the previous smells!), so I prefer to just use one. If I ever run into a garlic incident again, I’d definitely throw two in there to try to solve the problem as quickly as possible!

Since I’ve been using Affresh for several weeks, I’ve noticed that I don’t need to worry about mineral deposits. Affresh keeps me from having to scrub the inside nooks and crannies of my dishwasher. I love that!

I’ve mentioned before that I also use Affresh to make my garbage disposal not smell. I’ve found that Affresh by Whirlpool is a great product to keep both dishwashers and disposals smelling clean and running properly!

Where Can I Buy Affresh Dishwasher & Disposal Cleaner Tablets?

Affresh is avaialble at retailers nationwide, including Sears, Best Buy, Lowe’s, Kroger and Food Lion, and at www.affresh.com. A pack of 6 tablets has a suggested retail price of $6.99.

I wrote this review while participating in a campaign by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Affresh and received product samples and a promotional item to thank me for taking the time to participate.

How did You Get Your Home Ready For Baby’s Arrival?

When I was pregnant both Haiden and Piper, I was obsessed with making sure we had all of the most recommended baby products (purchased at rock bottom prices, of course!), but I never really went through that “nesting” phase that I read about in all those pregnancy books. I kept waiting for those telltale urges to organize, declutter and sanitize every square inch of my house, but it never happened!

In all honestly, my disorganized self would have loved to feel the urge to deep-clean any area of my home during my pregnancies! I wish I had been one of those pregnant women who thrived on doing things like renting a steam cleaner and blasting out every last bit of grime from my all exposed surfaces. I wish I had the motivation to scrub every square inch of tile in my bathroom or organize all the “stuff” that resides in the depths of my basement. I really, really wanted to want to find a vacuum cleaner rental store and use industrial-powered machines to clean each fiber of my old carpet. Unfortunately, I just didn’t have the time or energy to get it all done (while staying happy, relaxed and healthy!).

Thankfully, my wonderful mom came and cleaned my whole house just before Haiden was born! Of course, I’d appreciate it wherever I lived, but I felt so incredibly blessed because my mom traveled 150 miles just to do that for me! She spent the day mopping floors, washing windows, wiping down baseboards and even organizing baby clothes while I worked one of my last days before heading on maternity leave. She got so much done, plus she was happy to do it! By the time she left, I had a pristine home that was ready for baby and ready for visitors.

So tell me, did you go through a nesting phase? What did you do to get your home ready for baby’s arrival?

How Do You Keep In Touch With Distant Family Members?

If you know me in person, you know that family is everything to me. First and foremost, that means my husband and kids, but it also includes my parents, my grandma, my sister, brother, their spouses, my in-laws and a handful of other family members that I’m close to.

Because family is so important to me, it’s hard for me to live 150 miles away from my parents and sister, and about 80 miles away from my husband’s parents. My kids love to see all of their grandparents, plus aunts and uncles, and James and I also want to see them at every opportunity! While traveling the distance sometimes doesn’t work out when we’re trying to coordinate all of our busy schedules, it’s nice to know that technology can bridge the miles and allow us to converse as a family.

While I’ve never personally used a conference call service to get our families together in spirit, I think it would be absolutely essential if one or more of us happened to live overseas. If that were to happen, I’d definitely try out Powwownow, because it’s a free service that exists to provide both web and call conferencing!

Have you ever used conference calls to keep in touch with more than one family member at the same time?
