Creative Paint Project for a Girl and Boy Sharing a Room with Disney Glidden Paint: The Reveal! #DisneyPaintMom

paint project for a girl and boy sharing a room

I’ve written a few times about my big project of adding more personality to Haiden and Piper’s bedroom with Disney Glidden Paint. My biggest challenge was figuring out a creative paint project for a girl and boy sharing a bedroom!

Before the specialized paint project, the entire room got a fresh coat of the very neutral Pawprint hue of Disney Glidden paint. My husband often gets exasperated at my gravitation toward neutral walls, and this time I certainly couldn’t blame him. Once the paint dried, I found that it ended up nearly exactly the same color as the previous shade!

On the upside, the room was small and easy to paint, and I definitely only had to use one coat! Plus the Disney Glidden paint covered up the marks and scuffs that just happen in a toddler’s bedroom.

Haiden and Piper have their beds on opposite sides of the bedroom, making it easy to do a creative paint project for each of them on the wall next to their toddler beds.

In my last Disney Glidden paint update I showed how I had taped off and painted a big vertical rectangle of Haiden’s wall Rally Blue from the Disney Glidden paint line.

After Piper saw Haiden’s blue wall, she started asking if someone was going to paint her wall pink. It seemed like a small job compared to what I needed to do to Haidens’ wall next, so I headed back to Walmart to pick up a quart of Butterfly Fly By from the Winnie the Pooh palette to do the same to Piper’s wall.

I’d bought Wall Candy Flutterflies butterfly wall decals during a sale a few months ago, and they were perfect to add some excitement to the pink painted panel on Piper’s wall.

With Piper’s wall done, I attacked Haiden’s wall. I taped out a 2-inch wide horizontal strip and three other strips going diagonally from one side of the blue panel to the other and painted the strips with  Magnificent Metallic Disney Glidden Paint tinted Glimmering Silver.

I knew as I was rolling the Disney Glidden specialty paint on that it was going to work perfectly. The directions for using Disney’s metallic paint were spot-on, and I had no problems with it. This close up picture shows how shiny and metal-like the metallic finish really is:

paint project for a girl and boy sharing a roomOnce the paint had dried and the tape was removed, I added stickers from the WallCandy Arts Race Cars decals to make dashes through the roads. I added Stop and Go signs and a set of Disney Cars decals to complete the look.

paint project for a girl and a boy sharing a roomOver the weekend, we had a little My Magic Room PJ Party to celebrate the big reveal of the bedroom. (Although we opted out of the “PJ” part of the party since none of the parents were up for a sleepover!).

We celebrated by putting together Disney Cars treat and favor bags and making Stoplight Brownies for a fun themed treat. I also served plenty of snacks and drinks for both the kids and adults!

Haiden and Piper were so proud of their new walls, and they were so excited to show the kids and adults who attended the party! I ended up being pretty proud of myself when everyone seemed impressed with my detailed painting job on Haiden’s roads!

Although I had made a super-fun racetrack to race cars down our steep stairs, and distributed plenty of cars for playing, the kids actually abandoned most of our planned activities to enjoy our (finally!) beautiful Minnesota spring weather. The kids played racing games, hauled and pushed sand in the sandbox and just soaked up the warm weather.

At the end of the party, I announced a $50 Walmart gift card giveaway, and made two attendees very happy when I agreed to give away 2 $25 Walmart gift cards instead of one $50 gift card!

There’s only one thing I wish I would have done differently with the Magnificent Metallic painting project: I wish I would have used 3M blue painter’s tape rather than the green Frog Tape. The metallic paint bled through both sides of the Frog tape, which left me the tedious job of touching up tiny little specks of silver paint around each road.

Other than the painting tape not working as well as I expected it to, the Disney Glidden Paint was great to work with and I would definitely use it again! I actually still have quite a bit of the Disney Glidden Magnificent Metallic silver paint left, and I’m brainstorming a creative way to make sure it gets used up!

Painting Tips and Lessons When Using Disney Glidden Paint #DisneyPaintMom

Note: This is part 2 of a 3-part series. Please read my first article about Disney Glidden Paint to see my initial thoughts and shopping experience before reading on.

disney glidden paintWhen I introduced the idea that I’m using Disney Glidden Paint to transform a room in our home, I noted that my son and daughter share a bedroom. All of us are happy with the arrangement, and we don’t have plans to separate them.

The downfall of having a boy and girl share a room is the over-abundance of neutral. There’s just too much brown, tan and white for a kids’ bedroom. I forgot to take a “before” picture of their bedroom, but I can easily explain it: light beige walls, white trim, wood furniture and very little in terms of decor.

Haiden and Piper’s bedroom could definitely use some personality, and Disney Glidden Paint has been helping me do exactly that.

disney glidden paintThe paint job is still a work in progress, but I actually mocked up my idea using the Room Painter on the Disney Glidden Paint website! The image above shows what I want the final product to look like, and I have three out of the five steps done:

Step 1: Haiden and Piper’s entire room got a fresh coat of Disney Glidden paint in Pawprint with an eggshell finish. This was from the Winnie The Pooh collection of colors. The paint went on smoothly and easily.

disney glidden paintStep 2: I smoothed two strips of Frog Tape painter’s tape down the wall on Haiden’s side. There was about 3-4 feet between the tape. I also taped the ceiling and the baseboard between the horizontal strips to form a large rectangle. Then, I cut in a thin coat of Disney Glidden Rally Blue (from the Disney Cars color selection) all the way around the taped area. After that, I used a full size paint roller so the entire rectangle was filled in with Rally Blue.

Step 3: Apply a second coat of Rally Blue paint to the inside of the rectangle.

disney glidden paint Step 4: in progress  Tape the painted blue section and add 2-3″ strips of Disney Paint’s Magnificent Metallic specialty finish in silver.

Step 5: in progress  Apply Disney Cars wall decals and other road-themed decals to turn the silver strips into roads with cars on them!

I think I learn a little more about painting tips, skills and techniques every time I paint, and this time was no exception!

First, I made the classic mistake of choosing a color for the bedroom walls that was just too similar to the previous color. Don’t get me wrong; Pawprint is a perfect warm tan color, but I couldn’t really see the difference after I painted over the ecru shade of the previous paint. On the plus side, that pretty much guaranteed that I only needed to use one coat of Disney Glidden Paint for the biggest area I planned to paint!

Second, I need to remember every time I paint that it’s the taping and prep work that takes the longest time! I really needed the painters tape on the left and right sides of the rectangle to be perfectly horizontal, so my husband suggested I use a laser level. It was a good idea, but I guess the floors in the bedroom are crooked, because when the device showed level, the laser line certainly wasn’t straight! When I did manage to get a straight line from the level, I found myself stepping in front of it so I couldn’t see it to tape against. Plus, cats love lasers, so my kitties had a ball following the laser line to the device and batting it out of position.

After I got my lines started on either side, I switched to quickly marking them with a pencil, then using the tape and a handheld level to get the lines straight from the ceiling to the floor. By the time I had finished putting up two strips of tape, nearly an hour had passed!

On the flip side, painting the rectangle inside the tape was a super-fast job. Cutting in was a breeze, especially since I learned that a 2.5 inch angled sash brush is the best tool for this job. Then, the roller covered so much area  that the actual painting only took about 20 minutes. I left the tape up, turned on a fan and let the first coat dry before applying the second coat.

disney glidden paintThe trickiest step is definitely going to be those silver stripes created with the Disney Glidden Paint Magnificent Metallic specialty finish. I’m excited to see what it looks like, and I’m even more excited to share the final project with all of you!

Easy Baby Food: 10 Useful Everyday Tools for Making Homemade Baby Food

how to make homemade baby food

When I was pregnant, I remember excitedly talking to another pregnant mom about homemade baby food and how great it would start making baby food at home. A few months after we both became new moms, I brought up the subject of making baby food at home and she told me that she just couldn’t handle the thought of making her son’s food along with everything else that came with caring for a baby.

I totally understand that having a new baby means having your hands full, but there was no convincing her that making homemade baby food is easier than you think! This is the first article showing you the many different ways you can make baby food for your little one at home. By the end of the series, I’m hoping you’ll not only be amazed at the variety of foods you can make for your baby, but also at the variety of ways you can make it!

If you like this post, please share it with others by pinning it on Pinterest.

If you’re looking for easy baby food recipes, they’re all easy!   Just puree and mash individual fruits and vegetables and mix them together. I have more advice coming up in a future article, but, really, you can’t go wrong if you stick with basic fruits and vegetables.

You’ll need a few tools for any method of baby food-making, but you probably already have at least a few of them in your home (you have a fork, right?). I strongly advise you to keep your budget in check before you purchase any specialty supplies for making baby food. After all, one really good reason to make homemade baby food is to save money!

If you do want or need to purchase something, look at the value it might add beyond the baby food years. For example, I have a nice food processor that I used to make baby food, and I still use it all the time for cooking prep and baking! It was an investment, but definitely worth it for the mileage I’ve gotten out of it. On the other hand, if you spring for a Beaba Babycook or other baby food maker you likely won’t use it after your little one starts eating regular table food.

easy baby food recipes

Here are 10 useful tools you can use to make baby food at home:

Basic Tools: How to Cook Homemade Baby Food

  1. Basic saucepan :: almost every fruit or vegetable you serve to your baby needs to be cooked. A no-frills saucepan with a 1.5 to 2-quart capacity is step #1 in basic baby-food making.
  2. Slow cooker or Crock Pot :: Slow cookers are perfect for those who “don’t have time” to make baby food at home. Most foods just need to be rinsed and possibly peeled before tossing into the slow cooker. You don’t even need to slice most of them (they’ll just need a longer cooking time). I have this 2.5 quart Crock Pot and it worked wonderfully for baby food.
  3. Food steamer :: You can definitely use steam to cook everything without a food steamer. At around $40, I understand that this isn’t the cheapest option. I just wanted to share that I used this Oster steamer because it was really nice to set the timer on it and get other things done while letting the steamer do the work. Plus, a steamer one of those appliances that can be used before and after the baby food-making stage.
  4. Steamer basket :: This is a great companion to your saucepan. Steaming is an incredibly healthy way to cook almost any fruit or vegetable, and you can even steam meat to make it extra tender. I received a food steamer like the one above as a gift, but, at $6, a steamer basket is a much more affordable option!

Basic Tools: How to Mash or Puree Homemade Baby Food:

  1. Table fork or Potato Masher:: Yes, an everyday table fork is easily the most affordable and accessible tool in this list! A fork is perfect for already-soft foods like bananas and avocados. You can also try using a potato masher or fork to mash cooked foods, but your baby might insist on a totally smooth texture. In that case, you’ll be better off with an electric option like a blender or food processor.
  2. Food Processor or Blender :: If you don’t have one of these, you probably shouldn’t buy one with the express purpose of making baby food. While it makes the process easier, Either one is a hefty investment when you should be saving money! If you have both of these, the food processor is a better option because is requires a lot less liquid to get a smooth consistency. If you only have a blender, never fear! It will work just fine to make your baby food.
  3. Immersion Blender :: If you already have an immersion blender or if you were planning on buying one for other purposes, it’s is a fabulous option for making ultra-smooth baby food. The only catch is that you’ll need to add a significant amount of liquid to get it pureed, but your baby might prefer it that way. One other option is to cook the food, add water, blend it with the immersion blender, then keep it on a low heat to let some of the excess water steam off before cooling and storing the baby food.
  4. Baby food grinder or Food Mill :: While this is a tool that has one specific purpose, a handheld, rotary baby food mill is far more affordable than other options and it’s an easy way to finely mash up baby food. One advantage to a baby food grinder is that you can make any food into baby food “on demand.” If you’re having chicken noodle soup for dinner, you can just run some of the chicken, noodles and vegetables through the grinder on the spot for baby.

Basic Tools: Storing Homemade Baby Food

  1. Ice cube trays :: If you’re planning on making more than one serving of baby food at a time, then you need a way to store them. Forget the expensive baby “food cubes”. If you want to freeze more than 8 or 10 cubes at a time you’ll end up spending a small fortune on multiple cubes. Go ahead and grab some basic ice cube trays instead; Dollar Tree usually carries two ice cube trays for $1!  Pour the pureed food in the trays and pop them in the freezer.
  2. Zip top freezer bags :: After the baby food frozen in the ice cube trays, run hot water over the bottom and pop the cubes out into a Ziploc freezer bag. You can keep separated by food type or mix them all together. If you only have regular ziplock bags just double-bag the baby food cubes to prevent funky-tasting baby food.

As you can see, you have a lot of options in the methods you can use to make your own baby food. You might not even have to spend a thing, depending on what’s already in your kitchen!

DIY Moby Wrap: How to Make A Baby Carrier for Under $10!

diy moby wrap

Someone very special to me spent over $40 on this Moby Wrap just before I had my first baby. It was near the top of my wish list of baby items, and it never even occured to me that I could find instructions for a DIY Moby Wrap.

My mother, however, totally gave me the side eye when I squealed with excitement and showed her exactly what a Moby Wrap was. Eyebrows raised, she watched as I opened the little pouch and unwound yards and yards of fabric. “That’s it?” she asked?

Then my mom, an experienced seamstress and a champion bargain shopper, inspected the full length of seamless fabric and finished off edges and simply said, “Marybeth!” Which is a thinly-veiled admonishment that usually suggests I’m still a silly child :)

I’d forgotten all about that conversation until I recently received an email asking me if I had a resource or instructions for how to make a Moby Wrap. I had actually written a brief How to Make Your Own Moby Wrap article a few years ago, but that information could definitely use an update!

Instead of bumbling through writing and designing my own instructions for a DIY Moby Wrap, I think it’s best to refer you to other experts across the internet who have the process perfected.

Tips for your DIY Moby Wrap

Before I send you off to various sites to learn how to make your own Moby Wrap, I have just a few tips to share with you:

  1. Go to Target or Babies R Us and look a Moby Wrap in person. Moby Wraps come in a pouch made out of the same material as the wrap itself. Feel the fabric and get an idea of the weight, stretch and density of the fabric so you have an idea what you’re looking for when you go fabric shopping.
  2. You don’t need to make a Moby Wrap twin. Making your own Moby Wrap means you have your choice of patterns, colors and textures. Pick a fabric you like that you’ll actually use.
  3. All instructions you read will tell you to buy 5-6 yards of fabric and cut it in half the long way (so you’ll have two super-long pieces of fabric). RookieMoms suggested you ask the fabric store employee to cut the fabric for you. This is brilliant! Those people are magicians with scissors, and they’ll probably do the cutting perfectly.
  4. Buy the material at the lowest possible price. See my fabric shopping tips below for a few ways to save money on fabric.
  5. Watch a video tutorial on how to use a Moby Wrap. Trust me, this is much, much easier than following printed instructions! If you don’t get it the first time, don’t give up. You’ll be able to do it perfectly in no time!

baby dealsSave Money at the Fabric Store:

Fabric prices can be super-cheap or rediculously expensive, depending on the store and where you look. If your Walmart store carries fabric, go there first and look for bargain-priced fabric for $1 or $2 per yard.

If you can’t shop at Walmart for fabric, head to JoAnn Fabrics. Visit the JoAnn Fabrics printable coupon page or check your Sunday newspaper for a flyer with a coupon to save 40% or 50% on one item or a single cut of fabric. If you can get your fabric for $2 a yard, your DIY Moby Wrap will be extra-cheap!

How to Keep Fresh Berries from Getting Moldy

baby deals

I recently discovered a fantaastic discount grocery store in my neighborhood. One of the great bargains that I find nearly every time I visit the store is packages of fresh strawberries, blackberries, raspberries or blueberries for under a dollar (or sometimes even two for one!). That’s an incredible price, especially since Haiden can eat blackberries and blueberries by the handful!

Unfortunately, the berries are usually at the discount store because they’re close to expiration. I wasn’t about to buy an expensive fruit and vegetable wash, so I just made sure to buy only what we could eat within the same day or the next day. Then, a friend told me about this fantastic homemade fruit wash to keep fresh berries from getting moldy.

If you like this post you can easily share it with others when you pin it on Pinterest!

Trust me, I’ve been using this method to prevent mold on berries for about 4 weeks, and it hasn’t failed me yet! Here’s what to do:

  1. Mix 2 tablespoons white vinegar and 2.5 cups of water in a medium bowl. Increase this to 1/4 cup vinegar and 5 cups water if you have a lot of berries.
  2. Drop the berries into the solution and gently agitate the mixture. Make sure all surfaces of the berries touch the vinegar solution!
  3. Pour the berries and vinegar through a colander. (I like a colander with bigger holes so it doesn’t take forever to drain all the water)
  4. Rinse with cold water.
  5. Gently shake berries dry. Store in a container in the refrigerator until you’re ready to eat. I’ve always been a fan of Tupperware Fridgesmart containers, but this $8 adjustable Berry Keeper looks great and has fantastic reviews!

Since using this vinegar solution I’ve had berries that have lasted nearly two weeks after I bought them at the grocery store! I can also assure you that the vinegar smell and taste is rinsed away during step 4. If there’s any residual vinegar, it evaporates within hours, and I promise you your berries will not smell or taste like vinegar :)

This homemade fruit and vegetable wash to keeping berries from getting moldy costs just pennies and has definitely saved me from wasting money on produce that spoiled before we ate it. I’m hoping it helps a few of you out, too!
