The Famous El Capitan Theater + the Real Disney Vault at the Disney Soda Fountain in Los Angeles

el capitan theater at nightLate last month I took part in the Iron Man 3 event, which included the excitement of walking the red carpet at the El Capitan Theater for the premiere of Iron Man 3. I had never been in that Theater before, and I was in awe of the beauty inside the theater, as well as the spectacular lights of the theater’s exterior!

disney soda fountain at el capitan theaterThe day after the Iron Man 3 premiere, our group was invited for a private tour of the El Capitan Theater and breakfast at the Disney Soda Fountain.

I had been so star struck and centered around the Iron Man 3 premiere the previous night that I really didn’t appreciate everything that makes the El Capitan Theater special, so I was especially glad to have some time to view the finer details of the theater and appreciate the history within its walls.

Ed Collins, the Executive Director of Operations for the El Capitan Theater, was kind enough to give us the tour, and it was clear that he has a deep-seated love and appreciation for the theater itself. I got the definite impression that he took his job very seriously and he considered it a privilege to be able to share so much interesting information about the El Capitan with us.

IMG_4829The El Capitan Theater has been around since 1926, but only stage shows were performed there for the first 15 years of its existence. The people who restored the theater starting in 1989 uncovered plenty of Playbills and newspaper ads detailing famous names who had appeared in shows on the stage of the El Capitan. Rita Haworth, Clark Gable and Bob Hope are just a handful of people who shared the El Capitan stage.

The El Capitan took on its first movie premiere with Citizen Kane. Isn’t that amazing? One of the best movies of all time premiered at a theater that wasn’t even a movie theater! The reason for that it was because the movie wasn’t a favorable impression of William Randolph Hearst. Then, when it was time to find a theater to premiere it, no theater wanted to show Citizen Kane because Hearst’s newspapers reviewed the movies showing at those theaters, and they didn’t want to be on his bad side.

Mr. Toberman, the owner of the El Capitan, decided to try a movie showing, and the first premiere was Citizen Kane in 1941. After the success of that premiere, the owner decided to close the theater, modernize it and reopen as The Paramount movie theater in 1942.

When Disney acquired the El Capitan Paramount Theater in 1989, the executives chose to restore the location back to the original El Capitan Theater that opened in 1926.

el capitan wall of fameThere’s such a unique blend of past and present decorating the theater–it’s practically a show business muesum!

The El Capitan Wall of Fame holds an enormous collection of programs, photos and artifacts of key times from the theater’s history. These are just a few of my favorite parts of the wall of fame:

photos from premiere of citizen kaneThese are photos from the premiere of Citizen Kane in 1941.

IMG_4826There were lots of interesting photos from a variety of Hollywood Walk of Fame star ceremonies that took place in front of the El Capitan Theater over the years.

oz the great and powerful wicked witch costumeI also loved seeing all the actual props and costumes from Oz The Great and Powerful that were on display in glass cases around the theater. While there were several displays, my favorite was the one with the Wicked Witch costume pictured above. I was in love with the fact that it was perfectly formed onto a green mannequin. Seriously, Disney just thinks of everything!

That morning also included breakfast at the Disney Soda Fountain (located adjacent to the El Capitan Theater) and we got to experience their brand new party room.

IMG_4803Their party room is now available for private parties to rent and have a party with a red carpet theme. We even had one member of our group, Jennifer from Makobi Scribe, who was celebrating her birthday on our trip.

IMG_4809

To everyone’s surprise, the El Capitan had made our breakfast into a little birthday party for her! It was really fun to experience a real birthday party in the party space!

IMG_4812The theater will decorate the party room with the movie that’s showing on the big screen of the El Capitan at the time, so we, of course, had an Iron Man 3 party!

There were fun Iron Man 3 centerpieces on every table and coordinating balloons tied to each custom Mickey Mouse chair. The room also had framed Iron Man 3 movie posters placed around the room.

Since Iron Man 3 is currently playing at the El Capitan Theater the parties held at the Disney Soda Fountain will also have an Iron Man theme!

The private party rental at the Disney Soda Fountain with the El Capitan Theater tie-in is such a fun idea, it makes me wish I could have one of my litte ones’ birthday parties there this summer–especially when the theme changes to Monsters University or Planes!

After breakfast in the party room, we visited the Disney Soda Fountain, which includes a fun old-fashioned ice cream parlor menu. There’s also the Disney Studio Store that sells exclusive Disney merchandise.

the real disney vaultFor me, the most fun part of the Disney Soda Fountain is a real representation of the Disney Vault (aka “Walt’s Vault”) that’s depicted in a lot of promotional clips for Disney DVDs and Blu-Ray sets. This is the video vault where the movies are “kept” when they’re not sold.

According to Mr. Collins: So it was a marketing campaign, right? [The vault] was digital, virtual. When we opened the store we teamed up with Disney Home Entertainment to have the real vault at our location in Hollywood.

If you look at the strip of film that rims the ceiling, that actually relects the DVDs in the order they came out starting in 2005.

The theater director said that it’s really fun for Disney Soda Fountain guests to see how many of the movies on the film strip they can identify. It was true! There was a little kid in there doing exactly that as I exited the store.

disney soda fountain store merchandiseAs a lover of all things Disney, I was happy I had a few minutes to shop and pick up a little gift for both Haiden and Piper. The store had a great selection of Iron Man merchandise, and there were also plenty of traditional Disney character merchandise to choose from.

Overall, the Disney Soda Fountain and El Capitan Theater together offer a fantastically unique experience for both kids and adults. If you’re ever in Hollywood you should definitely check it out!

More Gwyneth Paltrow Interview Details + It’s All Good Cookbook Review #IronMan3Event

DSC_7238A few days ago I wrote about my Gwyneth Paltrow interview opportunity. She was so likeable and so real–I loved everything about the interview!

About half the interview was spent talking about her role as Pepper Potts in Iron Man 3. We spent the rest of the session discussing her new cookbook, It’s All Good: Delicious Easy Recipes That Will Make You Look Good and Feel GreatI really feel like I learned a lot about Gwyneth, her parenting style and her lifestyle in the short time the interview covered!

Here are my favorite parts of the interview:

How did you get into writing cookbooks?

…My son has really bad eczema, so we did his food allergy tests and he’s really allergic to gluten and cow’s milk. I felt so bad for him–not having regular ice cream and meatballs and stuff. So I just started making him a mini-encyclopedia of totally yummy comfort food that’s just on his diet.

What advice do you have regarding the best nutrition?

A nutritionist once told me that the way we’ve changed our diet in the last 50 years is crazy. Like, if you showed our great grandmothers the way we’re eating they’d be like, This isin’t even food. What are you doing?

So, the nutritionist told me, when you’re at the supermarket, shop the periphery. That’s where all the fresh food is. That’s where the chicken, fish, beef, everything is. Avoid the aisles–tha’ts where all the processed food is.

My philosophy at home is always: try to cook really healthy at home because I can’t control what they eat at friends’ houses. I don’t want to.I want them to be autonomous and make their own choices and have a life.

But I think that that’s their balance. I try to cook healthy at home,a and then out, I’ll eat whatever I want to.

Do you cook with your kids?

Oh, yes. My son, especially, is really, really into it. We cook something together every weekend. I actually think the kitchen is an amazing place to interact and teach kids. It’s such quality time of interacting but you’re also making dinner. Like you’re actually doing something.

interview with gwyneth paltrowAfter a fantastic interview where I learned more than I ever dreamed I’d learn about Gwyneth Paltrow’s life, I received an autographed copy of her new cookbook!

I admit that I have good intentions, but I’m not the healthiest cook in the world. Nevertheless, there are some fantastic-looking recipes in It’s All Good! I didn’t have time to actually make any of the foods featured in the cookbook, but here are a few pictures I snapped of recipes that I truly can’t wait to try:

honey-sesame-carrots

Carrots with Black Sesame and Ginger

sauteed corn with chimichurriSauteed Corn with Chimichurri

the best green juiceI’m most excited to try The Best Green Juice! It’s described as “Just as energizing as a cup of coffee with non of the letdown.” With ingredients like Kale, lemon, apple and ginger, it sounds healthy and refreshing!

There are a wide variety of recipes in the cookbook, and it covers everything from eggs to brownies to oatmeal! Even if you’re not looking for a cookbook that fits a special diet requirement, there will be plenty of recipes that will be good for your family in It’s All Good!

Who is the Kid in Iron Man 3? An Interview With Ty Simpkins #IronMan3Event

who is the kid in iron man 3I have a feeling you all know that Iron Man 3 opened in US movie theaters last weekend. If you happened to see it, you may have asked, Who is the kid in Iron Man 3?

I knew next to nothing about Ty Simpkins two weeks ago. Then I had the chance to interview him just before seeing Iron Man 3 at the Hollywood premiere. Not only is he a smart, funny kid, he’s a great actor, too!

who is the kid in iron man 3Ty Simpkins answered a lot of questions from the group of 25 bloggers who asked him questions. Here are my favorite parts of the interview:

What’s your favorite aspect of your character [in Iron Man 3]?

I think my favorite aspect of being my character is that I get to meet Tony Stark. But I’m similar to him. Because I’m, like, a genius in the movie. And he’s a genius in the movie, of course, more of a genius than my character.

How does it feel to be working with Robert Downey Jr.?

Oh, it’s awesome. Like literally Robert Downey Jr. is my favorite person.

Were you nervous when you met him?

He actually asked me that. And I said, no, I’m just really excited to meet him.

How did you react to getting the part [of Harley in Iron Man 3]?

I screamed yes! I was really excited. I was at a cello class, and  it made cello even better.

How did you get into acting?

So I’ve been acting since I was born. I was still in my mom’s stomach when people called and asked me to be on either a TV show or a soap opera.  But…they asked my mom. And she said I’m not born yet. But and then they said we’ll wait.

What’s your next project?

So I just finished Insidious 2. That comes out in September.

And I’m really excited for this movie called Conversations with Andy. It’s about a sixth grade kid who is having a tough time…with his family. They’re getting a divorce and stuff. And then he meets Andy Warhol and Andy helps him out and stuff. So I’m really excited for that.

Are stunts fun?

Yeah, I love doing my stunts. It’s really fun.

Who are your biggest role models?

So there’s Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Johnny Depp…Besides Robert Downey Jr. I would love to work with Chris Evans or Johnny Depp.

Who’s your biggest supporter?

My biggest supporter? My mom.

who is the kid in iron man 3It was fun asking Ty Simpkins questions and hearing about an acting career from his perspective. He’s a smart, articulate guy, and we’ll be seeing much more of him in the future!

Iron Man 3 No Spoilers Review: 5 Fantastic Moments From the Movie #IronMan3Event

iron man 3 no spoilers movie reviewLast week I had the great fortune of attending the red carpet premiere of Iron Man 3. That night, I watched the film for the first time and I was blown away by both the story and the spectacle!

I detest spoilers for anything I’m really looking forward to, so below you’ll find an Iron Man 3 no-spoilers review! If you want to know all the Iron Man 3 spoilers, a quick Google search will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about the movie.

I also recently received news that Iron Man 3 opened to record-breaking ticket sales in 42 international territories last weekend! It surpassed The Avengers’ international opening weekend by 10 million, and it was the biggest opening weekend ever in 8 countries!

Even more impressive, Iron Man 3 was the #1 film in every market and was the biggest opening weekend of all time in the Asia Pacific and Latin America regions!

Iron Man 3 opens today  (May 3, 2013) in the United States, and it’s so good I’m certain it will set box office records here, too!

I’m going to tell you flat-out that I loved Iron Man 3. It’s full of action and adventure, and it also delves into emotions, psyche and relationships. I can’t wait for my husband and my friends to see it. I’ve hardly said a word about the movie to anyone because I don’t want to accidentally slip and spoil a surprise moment!

But, there are several spoiler-free moments in the film that are fun and exciting to know about, and they’ll hopefully get you just as excited for the movie!

Note: The Iron Man 3 clips and videos I mention below are widely available and were released by Disney & Marvel over the past few months to promote the movie. I’m not embedding them in this post in case you want to be totally surprised by the scenes in Iron Man 3.

5 Spoiler-Free Fantastic Moments from Iron Man 3:

iron man 3 review1. Tony Stark Meeting Harley (Ty Simpkins) for the first time: Tony Stark just happens to take shelter in the workshop on Harley’s mom’s property. When Harley runs into Stark the first time, Harley’s soft demeanor, wit and quick-thinking show that he’s a pint-size match for Iron Man. Robert Downey Jr. and Ty Simpkins have a sweet chemistry that adds a lot of depth to the film.

Iron Man 3 No Spoilers Review2. The Reveal of The Iron Patriot: Don Cheadle plays Rhodey, a colonel in the US military who got has his own Iron Man suit in Iron Man 2. In Iron Man 3, the US government reveals the Iron Patriot, which is Rhodey in a fancy new patriotic-suit designed to help the country feel safer.

iron man 3 no spoilers review3. Tony Stark calling out The Mandarin: It’s no secret that The Mandarin is the villain in this film. Prior attacks on the country drive Tony Stark to the edge, and he publicly, very publicly, announces that he’s ready for The Mandarin.

It’s a dramatic scene that makes you hope that Tony Stark is a hero, that Iron Man really is the most powerful being on the planet, and that Stark didn’t just do something really foolish.

Of course, the government’s plans eventually backfire, but, in the meantime, the Iron Patriot suit is a pretty impressive version of the Iron Man suit!  Watch the Tony Calls Out the Mandarin clip.

iron man 3 no spoilers review4. The Introduction of Mark 42 (the 42nd Iron Man suit): As Tony Stark reveals in Nothing Has Been the Same Since New York, he’s had insomnia over events that took place in The Avengers. He spends his time, all his time, working and attempting to perfect his Iron Man suit invention to protect Pepper (and the rest of the world).

While Tony Stark puts a lot of emotion on display in that clip, the reveal of Mark 42, the 42nd Iron Man suit, is a hilarious and entertaining glimpse into Stark’s persona of arrogance and intelligence.

iron man 3 no spoilers review5. The Air Force One Rescue scene: I think it’s the best scene in the movie. It’s edge-of-your-seat suspense at it’s best!

One thing I really like about Marvel’s recent superhero movies is how they blend the fantastic with real life. In all the movies, I could almost imagine some of the scenes happening in real life. Each time, at the moment where I started to actually get anxious and picture something similar in my own life, an invisible switch was flipped to show that the drama or violence was just too over-the-top to be anything but a fantasy.

The Air Force One Rescue scene is a perfect example of this. The clip I posted earlier only shows the beginning of the scene, so it doesn’t give anything away. I have a feeling it will make you want to see the movie right now!

One final note on the film’s rating: Iron Man 3 is rated PG-13. I think it’s a perfect rating for the film, and kids 13 and up will definitely love the film.

Iron Man 3 is in theaters today and it’s a winner! Go see it in 3D and let me know what you think.

An Interview with Gwyneth Paltrow: Everything My Grandma {And Everyone Else} Wants to Know! #IronMan3Event

gwyneth paltrow candid photoI’m a longtime fan of Gwyneth Paltrow. I loved her in Sliding Doors. Shakespeare in Love is one of the loveliest films I’ve ever seen and, more recently, I’ve been thinking that she’s rocked her role as Pepper Potts in the Iron Man and The Avengers movies.

When I heard that I was going to participate in an interview with Gwyneth Paltrow before the Iron Man 3 premiere I was so super excited I could hardly contain myself. I also knew just the person who would be the most thrilled when she heard the news: my grandma. She’s a celebrity-watcher and I knew she’d want to know all about it, especially those details like what Gwyneth really looked like, how she acted and what she was wearing.

My grandma isn’t online, but I thought of her throughout the entire interview, and I’ve been mentally writing this post to share the details about my fantastic interview with not only her, but with all of you, my favorite readers!

The interview was set up in a small group setting, with 24 other bloggers and I sitting in a few rows of folding chairs waiting patiently for Gwyneth to show up and stand in front of us for questions.

We were alerted that she had entered the building and then she burst into the room. She kicked off the meeting exclaiming “Wow!” with a giant smile when she saw all of us sitting and waiting for her.

Then she stood in front of stacks of her new book and started autographing each one as she took our questions.

Here are a few of my favorite questions and answers from the interview. I think they really say a lot about her warm personality and energetic spirit:

How did you feel when you were picked to be on the cover of People Magazine’s Most Beautiful issue?

Honestly,  Steven [She gestured to a man who was standing just to the right of her], this man has been my publicist since I was nineteen years old, and he sent me the email and I was like, This is a typo.

I reread it three times, and then…I got this really weird old feeling that my school bully somehow was playing a trick on me. I swear, I went through this whole weird thing! I had to talk to my shrink about it! I was beyond surprised, flattered, and I still kinda can’t believe it. It’s, it’s really cool.

How does it feel to be that strong [as Pepper Potts in the Iron Man suit]?

I loved it so much.  I was getting kind of like, Come on, guys.  All these boys are flying around doing all this fun stuff. I loved how patient and kind and sweet Pepper is, but, but when I read this script, I thought, Oh yeah.

Pepper is in the suit and flying around, and I loved doing the stunts. I really had never done anything like that before and it was really fun.  I felt like I should’ve been doing this my whole career. It was like, Why am I doing all these period films? It’s so boring.

Are we going to see you in more action films?

I don’t know. I would really like to, but really [laughs], am I old now to start being in action movies?

In the comics, Pepper Potts gets her own suit and she becomes a character called Rescue. The nice thing is is that everybody’s been very sweet about Pepper in this movie.  All the journalists who came in were like, Oh my God, you have to have your own movie! We need a Rescue movie! And I’m thinking, Okay, well, I’d better hit the gym!

What color would you choose for your own Iron Man suit?

Gray, silver and white. My favorite colors.

What’s it like working with Robert Downey Jr.?

It’s so fun. He’s really spontaneous, and genius with improvising. You’re really on your toes. It’s really interesting, actually , to see how all these different actors, their processes and how they work.

Jeff Bridges, on the first Iron Man movie, he had binders full of research. Everything was underlined and highlighted. There were graphs!

Then Robert would come in, read the scene and rip it up. He’s say Nope. We’re not doing it. Let’s make it up. And poor Jeff Bridges would be dying, because he had memorized everything! Then, as the woman, I’m like, Let’s keep everyone happy.

But I personally loved it. It was really fun. You never knew what was going to happen, which I love. Jeff Bridges, however, did not love it!

Robert creates a fun environment, and my kids [who were on set] just love him so much. It was a nice shoot. When you work with someone over and over again that you really love, and that environment is really familial, the kids feel it. Everybody feels it. It really was so great.

As the interview started to wrap up, I realized that I’d had the biggest smile on my face for nearly the entire time Gwyneth Paltrow answered our questions. I truly can’t believe how personable she was and how she was able to make her A-list lifestyle so relatable. I think everyone in the room can agree that it was like we were catching up with a friend, not interviewing the World’s Most Beautiful Woman!

Interview with gwyneth paltrow candid photoAnd wow, is she ever deserving of that Most Beautiful Woman title! She was dressed in a gorgeous white outfit and, let me tell you, I’ve never I’ve never seen anyone who radiated light and energy like she did. I think she has an inexplicable star quality, that certain something that makes the world take notice.

It’s easy to come up with thoughts that celebrities are sort of plastic figures that you canI can’t say this with any authority, but my gut tells me that Gwyneth Paltrow is simply a good person. Shortly after the spoke of working with the same publicist for 20 years, she pointed out another woman in the room and said, “There’s Julia, my best friend since seventh grade.” She’s had the same best friend since years before her acting career began! She also spoke lovingly of her children, her costars and her family.

Interview with gwyneth paltrow personal detailsEven after the interview was over, Gwyneth remained friendly and approachable. Several bloggers hovered around her and she spent time having a brief conversation with them before being escorted away. She was so engaging and so warm, it felt like I was saying goodbye to a friend when she left the conference room.

And my grandma? She was just as interested and enthralled with the entire experience as I was!

interview with gwyneth paltrowI’m actually only sharing half of my interview with Gwyneth Paltrow. She spoke extensively about her new book, It’s All Good, and the story behind its creation.  I have so much more to share about her and her life!

Keep your eyes open for a follow-up article with more personal and exclusive details about Gwyneth Paltrow. You won’t be disappointed!

Thanks so much to Crissy Page of Dear Crissy for the amazing photos from this interview!
