Just last week Sony flew me to LA for a special Ghostbusters press junket. They scheduled three days full of Ghostbusters amazingness for us, including an amazing press junket with Leslie Jones, Melissa McCarthy, Paul Feig, Katie Dippold and Kate McKinnon and a fabulous Ghost Corps tour!

I was so lucky to attend an early screening of the new Ghostbusters movie while out in LA.  We arrived to the theater and all of the employees there were dressed in jumpsuits which helped set the mood.  I grabbed my popcorn, put on my 3D glasses, and then… spent nearly two hours jumping out of my seat and laughing!

Let me clear things up right off the bat – the new Ghostbusters is is NOT a remake of the original.  It does have similar plot of four Ghostbusters catching ghosts and saving the city, but that is about where the similarities end.

Erin (Kristen Wiig) comes to talk to Abby (Melissa McCarthy) and Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon) at the Paranormal Studies Lab at the Higgin's Institute in Columbia Pictures' GHOSTBUSTERS.

The cast of the movie has incredible on screen chemistry.  I laughed so hard during this entire movie!  You can’t go wrong when you combine Kristin Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones in a movie in my opinion.  Chris Hemsworth is hilarious in this movie too!

The ghosts are a little scary (especially if you’re watching in 3D) so I wouldn’t bring young children who are easily scared, but just use your judgement.  Aside from the ghosts, it really is a pretty family friendly film.

By the way, if you’re a fan of the original Ghostbusters movie, keep your eyes peeled for some cameos from some familiar faces.

I have two pieces of advice going into Ghostbusters‘ opening night tonight:

  1. GO SEE THE MOVIE.  Seriously, don’t be skeptical and just go give it a try. Get tickets here 🙂
  2. Stay all the way through until the very last name on the credits has rolled. If you don’t, you’ll miss out on some pretty funny bonus footage!

A Hilarious Interview with the Cast of Ghostbusters #Ghostbloggers #Ghostbusters

Ghostbusters Press Conference

Just last week Sony flew me to LA for a special Ghostbusters press junket. They scheduled three days full of Ghostbusters amazingness for us, and I’m excited to share all the details with all of you!

Ghostbusters Press Conference

What happens when you get Ivan Reitman, Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon, Melissa McCarthy, Paul Feig, and Katie Dippold together in a room?  You get some awesome insider info on the new Ghostbusters movie and a press conference that feels more like a live comedy show.

I can’t even find a way to truly express how much fun these interviews were!

Ghostbusters Press Conference

Paul Feig, the director of Ghostbusters, assembled a “comedy dream team” for this movie and the cast was more than eager to be a part of it.

“This is a pretty good deal,” Melissa McCarthy recalls thinking when approached with the film.  Kate McKinnon described the experience as “A carnival ride, or a hoedown or any number of fun things. The funnest thing you could imagine,” while Leslie Jones said it felt like “summer camp” on set.

Ghostbusters Press Conference

Melissa McCarthy and Kristin Wiig (who wasn’t at the press conference due to illness) have worked together before, but debated on hazing the “newbies”.

McCarthy thought about increasing the weight of Leslie Jones’ proton pack incrementally over the shoot but ultimately decided not to.

Ghostbusters Kate McKinnon

Kate McKinnon’s character has to pronounce a lot of really tough science words in the film, but it wasn’t a challenge at all for the star who genuinely enjoys science in real life.  “Physics is fun,” said McKinnon, who also brought a soldering kit to set because she “got bored on the weekend” and wanted to brush up on her skills.

Ghostbusters Leslie Jones

If they were able to turn into ghosts and haunt someone, Paul Feig said that he would haunt all of the trolls on the Internet, which got a huge round of applause and laughter from the cast and the audience.

Speaking of trolls, the cast encourages everyone, especially those who are skeptical of the new Ghostbusters, to “Just go see the movie.”  Leslie Jones said just to buy yourself some Twizzlers so at least you can enjoy those if you really don’t like the movie – but I think you’ll be surprised.

When asked how they would embrace the ghost forms of themselves, Kate McKinnon joked that she would use her ghost-abilities to audit adult education classes, while Leslie Jones would haunt handsome male celebrities.  Melissa McCarthy would turn herself into a ghost tabby cat and live with McKinnon who reportedly really spoils her cats.

Ghostbusters Chris Hemsworth Questions

Although he wasn’t there, Chris Hemsworth even got in on the press junket action.  He sent in a few hilarious questions during the interview.

By the way, if you’re a Chris Hemsworth fan, stick around to the very end of the movie.  Stay for the credits. You’ll see a side of Chris that you’ve never seen before and it will totally be worth it!

Ghostbusters Melissa McCarthy

A ton of laughs were shared during this press conference, but some important topics were discussed, too. Like the fact that the female Ghostbusters are awesome role models.

“Every time we put something out in the world where I think my daughters can see themselves and they won’t even have the realization of, Why wouldn’t it be me? Why wouldn’t I be the ghostbuster? I think that’s such an incredibly important thing.” said McCarthy.

Introducing Ghostbusters to the New Generation + A Ghost Corps Tour!

Ghost Corps tour with Ivan Reitman Ghostbusters

Just last week Sony flew me to LA for a special Ghostbusters press junket. They packed some really fantastic items into the three days I was there, and I’m excited to share all the details with all of you!

While I was in LA, I got to do several really fun Ghostbusters related activities. I screened the movie, interviewed the cast, and toured Ghost Corps on the Sony Lot!  Ghost Corps is a production company founded by Ivan Reitman (producer of Ghostbusters) and Ivan himself showed us around!

Ghost Corps Tour Hook and Ladder 8

Although the Ghost Corps offices are pretty new, there was a great feeling of nostalgia there.  The exterior is decorated like the famous Hook and Ladder Company #8, which is where the characters in the original Ghostbusters worked.

Ghost Corps Tour Original Etco 1

The original Ecto-1 was sitting right outside, so we couldn’t walk by without stopping for a photograph with it.

Ghost Corps tour Ghostbusters Ecto 1

The Ghost Corps office is filled with memorabilia from the original Ghostbusters films and the brand new Ghostbusters!  There are glass cases filled with toys, including some of the new toys available for the new movie.

Ghost Corps Tour Display Case

I wanted so many of the items in that case for myself, and I wound up purchasing a few Ghostbusters souvenirs before leaving the lot.

Ghost Corps Tour Front Desk

At Ghost Corps front desk there is a buzzer created by a Ghostbusters fan plus a bowl full of Key Lime Slime Twinkies.

Ivan and the staff at Ghost Corps really enjoy seeing how passionate fans are about the franchise.  He told us that there are 300-500 Ghostbuster Groups worldwide, most of which are charity based.

Ghost Corps Tour Terror Dog

Do you remember this guy?  I couldn’t resist taking a selfie with one of the Terror Dogs from the movie.  Super scary!

Ghost Corps tour with Ivan Reitman

While we had lots of questions for Ivan, he wanted some feedback from us on the movie.  He mentioned that although some kids might be afraid of ghosts, the fact that the Ghostbusters can trap the ghosts and be in control makes them a little less fearful.

Ghost Corps Tour Walking Tour of Sony Lot

We also got to take a really fun and informational walking tour of the Sony Lot while we were there.  It was amazing to see some of the historic buildings and learn what they were formerly used for and what they are currently used for.

We walked onto the Barbara Streisand Scoring Stage, walked through the actual set of The Goldbergs (no photos allowed), sat in the audience seats on the Wheel of Fortune stage, saw Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison offices, scoped out celebrity parking spots and more!

Ghost Corps Tour Ghostbusters Lunch at Sony Lot

The day at Sony wrapped with a delicious lunch at the Sony Commissary with our own reserved #Ghostbloggers table.  Our place settings included a glow-in-the-dark Ghostbusters shirt, a box of Ecto Cooler, and my very own Ghostbusters pin!

THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE Review: Lots of Laughs for All Ages! #AlohaAngryBirds #AngryBirdsMovie

angry birds movie poster

Last month I went to Hawaii for The Angry Birds Movie press junket. Since then I’ve shared the amazing things I got to do in the spirit of the movie:

But the whole reason I was in Hawaii was for the movie, and I was happy that screening The Angry Birds Movie was the first item on my busy itinerary!

The angry birds movie parents review

I’m not going to share any spoilers from The Angry Birds Movie. I just want to tell you how I feel about the movie from a parent’s perspective.

I’ve played the Angry Birds app many times over the years, but I honestly never knew that there was a real story behind the game. It turns out that there is a story, and I’m the only person who’s played the game who didn’t know it.

angry birds movie quotes

From what I’ve learned, the plot of The Angry Birds Movie stays true to the game, but it’s more fleshed out. As someone who didn’t know the story, I had no problem following the film from the start to the finish.

As a parent, The Angry Birds Movie is definitely a movie I’d take my kids to. It’s pure entertainment from start to finish, with a sweet lesson on friendship and community built into it.

angry birds movie cast still

There are a few jokes aimed at adults. I’ll admit that, in general, they’re not appropriate, but they seemed even more funny when I realized just how far they would fly above my kids’ heads.

The big thing I really appreciated about The Angry Birds Movie was the complete lack of scary scenes or startling moments. I’m not going to lie: this is not just about protecting my kids, who scare easily. I’m the parent and sometimes the animated movies scare me!

Finally, the superstar cast put The Angry Birds Movie over the top in terms of comedy and entertainment. You already know about Maya Rudolph, Jason Sudeikis and Josh Gad (and you know I think Josh Gad can do no wrong!), but there are so many more big names in this movie!

Go see The Angry Birds Movie and be prepared to hear characters voiced by Peter Dinklage, bill Hader, Danny McBride, Kate McKinnon, Keegan-Michael Key, Tony Hale, Hannibal Buress, Jillian Bell and plenty of others!

About The Angry Birds Movie:

In The Angry Birds Movie, we’ll finally find out why the birds are so angry.

The movie takes us to an island populated entirely by happy, flightless birds – or almost entirely.

In this paradise, Red (Jason Sudeikis, We’re the Millers, Horrible Bosses), a bird with a temper problem, speedy Chuck (Josh Gad in his first animated role since Frozen), and the volatile Bomb (Danny McBride, This is the End, Eastbound and Down) have always been outsiders. But when the island is visited by mysterious green piggies, it’s up to these unlikely outcasts to figure out what the pigs are up to.

Featuring a hilarious, all-star voice cast that includes Bill Hader, Maya Rudolph, and Peter Dinklage, as well as Kate McKinnon, Keegan-Michael Key, Tony Hale, Tituss Burgess, Ike Barinholtz, Hannibal Buress, Jillian Bell, Danielle Brooks, Latin music sensation Romeo Santos, YouTube stars Smosh, and country music superstar Blake Shelton, who writes and performs the original song “Friends,” the Columbia Pictures/Rovio Entertainment film is directed by Fergal Reilly and Clay Kaytis and produced by John Cohen and Catherine Winder.

The screenplay is by Jon Vitti, and the film is executive produced by Mikael Hed and David Maisel.

Disclosure: Sony flew me to Maui and covered most expenses to facilitate this and other experiences related to The Angry Birds Movie.

Interviewing Josh Gad, Maya Rudolph and Jason Sudeikis for THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE #AlohaAngryBirds #AngryBirdsMovie

angry birds movie josh gad maya rudolph jason sudeikisIt’s certainly not everyday that I wake up in Hawaii, do beach yoga at The Four Seasons Maui, go to the Maui Tropical Plantations Zipline and finally attend an extravagant luau at The Four Seasons.

There’s no question that it was an amazing day, but I didn’t even mention the best part: I also had a time slot scheduled to interview a group of amazing comedians starring in The Angry Birds Movie just before the luau!

Interviewing Josh Gad, Maya Rudolph and Jason Sudeikis was a fantastic experience that I had built up in my head over the past few weeks.

I knew it was going to be entertaining (it was!).  I was sure it was going to be funny (it definitely was!). But I didn’t anticipate the thoughtful, interesting and relaxed conversation the three of them had with my group of influential mom bloggers!

Josh Gad, Maya Rudolph and Jason Sudeikis on The Angry Birds Movie, Parenting and Much More:

It was clear that it was going to be a good interview when Maya Rudolph sat down at the table and said, “This sucks, right?” while sweeping her arms to indicate the resort, the luau, the ocean and just Hawaii. As we laughed, Josh Gad jumped in and said, “I regret that they didn’t stick with Detroit.”

Maya Rudolph (MR): The Motor City

Jason Sudeikis (JS): It feels more apropos to the storyline…

Josh Gad (JG): …To the struggle of our birds.

Jason Sudeikis: We’d all go down to the plant and see how engines are made.

Me: Isn’t that where 8 Mile is, too?

Maya Rudolph: Tie it in!

Jason Sudeikis: There could have been a rap battle!

Maya Rudolph: Did our [interview] start already?

Jason Sudeikis: There’s no angrier bird than Eminem.

Maya Rudolph: But did our time start already?

Jason Sudeikis: Oh, I don’t know.

Josh Gad: This is great!

Jason Sudeikis: Let’s start.

Question: I would love to hear how each of you felt when you first got the call that they were turning Angry Birds into a movie.

josh gad the angry birds movie

JG: At first, I was like, well…I don’t know if this is such a good idea. John Cohen, the producer, showed me this incredible 20 minute presentation that just sold me. Immediately. The movie was so much more than just a mobile app adaptation. And the cast was incredible.

MR: I agree! Mainly just about the cast part. To be fair, I think I came on pretty late in the game. You guys were already recording.

JS: Yeah.

JG: That was the roughest day. We lost Beyonce about 2 days before you. [laughs]

JS: We bounced back stronger than ever.

MR: They were like, “How can we get a layman’s Beyonce?” [laughs] “Like, the poor man’s Beyonce.”

Question: How did you prepare for your role? Did you have to research birds? What did you do?

MR: I’ve eaten a lot of chickens. And eggs. I play a chicken so that helped.

JS: That’s the beginning and end…of their lives.

MR: I still don’t know which comes first.

JS: Ornithology…that’s what it is, right? Ornithology…

JG: You know who was very big on ornithology?

MR: Barack Hussein Obama?

JG: That’s right. Another president, actually. I only know this because I’m reading a book. A man named Theodore Roosevelt.

MR: Teddy?!? My boy Teddy?

JG: The one that the bear is named after.

JS: Look at this! I feel like I should know more.

MR: Did you do homework?

JG: I decided that I knew this question would come up tonight, so I read as many books as possible before the mommy blogger interview.

MR: I feel like Teddy Roosevelt was into a lot of stuff.

JG: He was really into ornithology.

JS: He wanted to shoot [birds] right?

JG: He wanted to kill them but that doesn’t mean he didn’t love them. [laughs]

Question: Do you kids watch those surprise egg-opening YouTube videos?

Everyone: No…

MR: I feel like I’ve heard of the lady that talks…Oh! The lady that opens toys.

She has the most popular YouTube channel. She makes millions!

maya rudolph jason sudeikis angry birds movie

JS: Really?

MS: Why are we doing this?

JG: I’m going through my head, trying to figure out when I’m going to get my camera and start opening presents in front of it.

JS: We had to get up at 4:30 in the morning to fly today from New York with our 2 year old for the first time ever. He brought a little backpack for the first flight. We wrapped up a bunch of his toys in tissue paper so we could give them to him and he’d be like, presents!

Talk about bad parenting. We’re still letting him watch Beyonce videos and I show him videos of Savion Glover tap dancing. He’s like, “Da Da, tap dancing!” If you ask him to dance he’ll do it, but let’s be real, it’s more like clogging at this point.

MR: I found my son physically under the covers in the middle of the day with my iPad watching the whole new Beyonce album!

JG: My daughter still watches “Singing in the Rain”. She hasn’t really gotten into Beyonce yet. She’s obsessed with “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” the original. She’s not into Johnny Depp. Terrified of the Johnny version.

The Angry Birds Movie says, It’s ok to get angry. How do you talk to your kids about dealing with that?

JS: “Use your words” comes up a lot.

MR: In my son’s preschool they’ve been teaching the kids to take a breath. They say, “Smell the flowers.” then “blow out the candle.” They love to do it!

josh gad angry birds movie

JG: My daughter’s school uses colors. So red is angry, blue is calm, yellow is happy, green is calm. So we’ll talk like, “How can we get to yellow.”

I tell you, “Inside Out” was a great motivator to have some of these conversations about emotions with my kids, because it gave her a context. It helps her identify all the things going on in their minds.

Have your children seen The Angry Birds Movie yet?

JS: It was his first movie! I put him on my lap, and he sat there the whole time. Really, the only stuff he’s watched up to this point are Beyonce videos and tap dancing. Compelling stuff, but only about four minutes long.

So he sat there the whole time, the best is that he was sitting on my lap and he just crossed his legs like I was his little Barcalounger. I was like, “This is all right.”

What do you think your kids reactions to The Angry birds Movie will be?

MR: They’re psyched about this movie. My kids have been asking me what my bird does because all the other birds have the powers you learn in the game. But they don’t know about my bird.

JG: It’s a The Usual Suspects moment.

Just like Maya Rudolph’s kids, my own kids are super excited for The Angry Birds movie. I had the opportunity to screen it last month, and I’m excited for them to see it!

Exploring Maui as Bird Island for THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE #AlohaAngryBirds #AngryBirdsMovie

Angry Birds movie four seasons resort maui

Bomb, Red and Chuck from Columbia Pictures and Rovio Animations’ ANGRY BIRDS at the Four Seasons Resort in Wailea.

I can’t believe it’s been over a month since I was in Maui for The Angry Birds Movie press junket. That moment of receiving the itinerary and having minor heart palpitations over a few items on it feels like so long ago!

The first itinerary item that made my palms sweaty was ziplining at Maui Tropical Plantations. We did it on the first day and my Maui ziplining video shows exactly how much I ended up enjoying it!

This was the other agenda item that left me feeling shaky:

angry birds movie press junket hawaii

I’ve said in the past that I’m not ashamed of being called a scaredy-cat, and I actually think my fear of water-related activities are a big reason why I’m not adventurous. I’m not a strong swimmer, and the only two times I’ve snorked in my life have been bad experiences.

The first time I snorkeled was on a spring break trip to Cozumel, Mexico. My low confidence in my swimming got the best of me and I ended up having a panic attack in the water. Luckily I was wearing a life vest and a guide was nearby, so I spend the rest of the excursion drinking margaritas on the catamaran with another woman who didn’t even attempt to swim.

The second time I snorkeled was on my honeymoon. It was nice, shallow water on one of those private cruise islands. My husband was hardly even surprised when I had hardly even started to explore and I got stung by a jellyfish.

After those two experiences I haven’t been inclined to snorkel again, and I never felt like I was missing anything. But this was clearly an adventurous press trip, and I always want to make the most of any trip. It was settled: I was going to go snorkeling!

I knew I had made the right decision when we approached the Kai Kanani snorkeling center at Makena Beach at sunrise. Check out the view:

kai kanani snorkeling review

That boat way out in the distance slowly made its way to the shore as we waited:

kai kanani snorkeling review

As we boarded I was relieved to see plenty of crew members all suited up to go in the water with us. I was also happy to be fitted for a floatation device AND given a boogie board to keep me afloat.

The captain brought us to both Molokini Crater and Maui’s Turtle Town for some amazing snorkeling experiences. We had strict instructions to not touch the sea life and I was happy to keep a safe distance from all the amazing creatures!

After the snorkeling excursion Enza from enzasbargains.com, Diane from philzendia.com and I had a chance to explore more of our Bird Island (Maui) on our own. We remained close to our resort, because there’s no real reason to leave if you’re staying at The Four Seasons!

It was a crazy windy day, but we couldn’t leave without spending some time on the beach at the resort!

The four seasons resort maui beach

I wanted my family to know I was thinking about them even though I was far away:

We made a little inspirational video washing all our worries away:

Enza and I never know when we’ll see each other next so we needed just one more picture together.

Then I discovered my favorite way to wrap up a day of exploring Bird Island: a poolside drink in a whole pineapple!

Later this week I’ll be sharing the amazing interview I did with Maya Rudolph, Josh Gad and Jason Sudeikis just before we all joined a luau at the Four Seasons Resort Maui!
