I've had this website for a few years, but I didn't consider myself a professional blogger until I transitioned to a stay-at-home mom back in July. Since then, I've been able to work really hard on Baby GoodBuys, and with that work comes income and expenses. Income and expenses equal tax documents.
It's no secret that I don't consider myself to be organized. I'm staring at a table full of paperwork right now! My biggest challenge in keeping my blog tax information in order is receipts. I pay for hosting, blog design and a few other odds and ends throughout the year. Here's my confession: I've simply been putting most of those receipts into a Ziploc bag and stashing it out of sight! Further, did you notice I said “most”? There's a host of online payments that I've made where the receipts are still sitting in my archived emails.
The other challenge is income. I'm not getting rich off this website, but I do make a little bit of money from various sources. I'm absolutely terrible at keeping track of that, too! If I'm considering this website to be at least a semblance of a business, I need to treat it as one. That includes tracking more income details so I'm not surprised when tax time comes.
Thankfully, Smead is going to help me get my taxes organized for the coming year with the Smead Kraft Expanding Files and the Smead Tax Organizer! I have a great feeling that these two office products will make my life much easier at tax time for the coming years!
The Smead Kraft Expanding Files is a great way to file materials without the bulk of a filing cabinet. I truly don't have a file cabinet worth of receipts and records for my expenses and income, so this compact, letter-size organizer makes it far easier to contain all the documents. Further, I don't have a home office, and our file cabinet is in our home's lower level. Keeping the blog records in a portable file makes it easy to access anywhere, since I'm used to working everywhere!
The Smead Income Tax Organizer is a sweet little system designed to make my life as neat and clean as possible (and I can use all the help I can get in that area!). This is a multi-folder “book” that has six pockets. It has a printed tax checklist on the inside front cover, and pre-printed labels are included to assign categories to each of the six pockets. With labels like W-2s, 1099s, Vehicle Tax Registration and more, it should be easy enough to keep all my information within arms' reach. I also love that I can keep the 6 categories that are most important to me in the book, but I can use the other labels on other folders, if needed.
Getting these products from Smead actually makes me excited to organize all my documents. I'm still a bit lost for this year, but I think by April 15, 2012, my taxes will be a breeze!
