This post is brought to you by Stitch Fix and written by me, Marybeth Hamilton. Thanks for reading!

There’s no denying that the coziest season is fall. It’s also probably the easiest time of year to pull together an aesthetic because the styles are so timeless.
Start with sweaters, because it’s rarely a cozy look without one. Then there are boots, scarves and hats to really give yourself an autumn look.
But what about everything besides the sweater? What should be worn between the hat and the boots? This is where you need to be careful. This is where you need to pay attention to my rule.

Too many loose elements will make you look shapeless.
Too many tight pieces and you’ll lose the cozy aesthetic.
Chunky boots can weigh you down, but slim boots could draw attention away from your cute sweater.
Don’t worry. I can help with that.
My style rule is something that I follow to a T for every season, but it’s especially important for fall. Because fall trends almost always include roomy tops and bottoms. And I swear, it applies for every shape and size.
My style rule
- Little shirts with big bottoms. (meaning pants or skirts)
- Little bottoms with big shirts.

Some definitions:
Bottoms is defined as what you wear to cover your legs. Pants, jeans, skirts, skorts.
Little means the opposite of loose or baggy clothing. Not necessarily tight, but usually something that fits close to your body with a little stretch in it.
It’s a super easy rule to follow, and the payoff is great. I promise it’s the most flattering thing you can do for your figure if you want to incorporate a loose-fitting piece in your outfit.
There. I just made finding the right clothes so much easier.
I have two more pieces of advice:
Use the style rule when you layer
Fall fashion inspo is all about layers, but don’t forget to balance your jacket or sweater with what you’re wearing on the bottom.
Loose pants and a slim shirt look great together. Don’t cover it all up with something big and heavy. It will drag your entire look down with it.
Instead, take advantage of short sweaters and boxy jackets. A flannel button-up that’s shortened at the waist with a knot is another cute way to add a layer.

Use the style rule when you accessorize
This one is a bit trickier, only because it’s tempting to wear all the things while they’re in season! The cute felt hats, the loopy scarves, the boots, and even the jewelry need to be balanced with your tops and bottoms.
Too many accessories makes you look like you’re wearing your entire wardrobe on your body.
If you’re wearing loose pants, make sure your boots aren’t adding too much bulk to your lower half.
Wear your hat if your upper body is lightly dressed, and don’t wear a scarf on top of a baggy sweater.
How to find fall clothes
One easy way to find new clothes to refresh your fall wardrobe is Stitch Fix. Because you’ll have experts helping to pick out items that are perfect for you, based on your style, fit and budget. Even better, there’s no commitment and no subscription required.
I rarely use fitting rooms. Which means my biggest time wasters when shopping for clothes is my own fault.
I buy what looks good, try it on at home, and return what doesn’t work. Two round trips to a store? In this economy? It’s foolish and I know it.
The Stitch Fix shopping method saves time and money while also ensuring the clothes you buy are right for you. They offer a free “Try before you buy” try-on program that allows you to try everything on at home without pressure.
