Family movie night. At 5 and 6 years old, my daughter and son are starting to look forward to family movie night. For them, it’s all about watching any movie right now, but it’s so much more than that for me.
Family movie night means both mom and dad have stopped what they’re doing to snuggle up with the kids and watch a film everyone will enjoy. It means laughing at the movie, then laughing together later as the kids recount the funniest parts.
Given my kids’ ages, we haven’t had trouble finding anything to watch together. There’s no shortage of quality animated films to entertain all of us, but there will come a time when Haiden and Piper will want to move forward into the live-action category.
Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day is the perfect film for family movie night!
About Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day:
Disney’s heartwarming comedy will have your entire family laughing out loud.
Based on the best-selling book, it follows the exploits of Alexander as he experiences the most terrible and horrible day of his young life and wonders if bad things only happen to him.
But he discovers he’s not alone when his dad (Steve Carell), mom (Jennifer Garner) and family live through their own terrible – and hilarious – day. It will tickle everyone’s funny bone, and warm their hearts as they discover how even on rotten days, families can grow closer.
I’ve always loved the original book, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst and Ray Cruz, so I was curious to see how the film version would play out.
I was so happy to find that the movie didn’t attempt to recreate the plot of the book word-for-word. Instead, many elements of the book were kept intact, while the story was expanded to make a feature-length film.
Further, the story that was written to fit in with the book is pretty great. It’s a “Disney-fied” tale about the ups and downs of an everyday family.
From a parent’s point of view, I think this movie is very much on par with live action Disney Channel shows like Good Luck Charlie. It’s cute and sweet, and the storyline is very simple. It’s definitely entertainment for all ages!
