Letter J tracing worksheet featuring uppercase and lowercase "Jj," a jar of jam, and tracing lines to help kids practice writing both forms of the letter.

Free Letter J Tracing Worksheet

When you’re teaching how to write letters for the first time, you start to understand that there are a few motions that are used again and again.

The letter J is one of the descender letters, which means part of it drops below the baseline.

This free printable letter J tracing worksheet helps preschool and kindergarten kids getting started with writing letters. It gives them the chance to practice uppercase J and lowercase j with dashed letter outlines.

What’s on this worksheet

  • Rows of dashed uppercase J outlines to trace
  • Rows of dashed lowercase j outlines to trace
  • Combined uppercase and lowercase rows to trace together
  • A jam picture to color

The downloaded page prints on standard 8.5″ x 11″ paper.

Tips for teaching how to write the letter J

J goes straight down then curves left at the bottom. The tail hooks to the left, stopping just below the baseline. Uppercase J often includes a serif cap at the top – make sure your style matches the rest of the material being taught to your kids.

Lowercase j has a dot and a tail. Like lowercase i, the dot goes directly above the stick. The tail then curves left below the baseline. Kids sometimes curve it the wrong direction — to the right instead of left. Help correct this with a reminder: “the tail curls toward the beginning of the alphabet.”

Laminate it. Descender letters like j take extra repetition because kids have to manage both the above-baseline and below-baseline portions at the same time. A dry-erase page protector makes that practice easy.
