Tips for teaching how to write the letter J
J goes straight down then curves left at the bottom. The tail hooks to the left, stopping just below the baseline. Uppercase J often includes a serif cap at the top – make sure your style matches the rest of the material being taught to your kids.
Lowercase j has a dot and a tail. Like lowercase i, the dot goes directly above the stick. The tail then curves left below the baseline. Kids sometimes curve it the wrong direction — to the right instead of left. Help correct this with a reminder: “the tail curls toward the beginning of the alphabet.”
Laminate it. Descender letters like j take extra repetition because kids have to manage both the above-baseline and below-baseline portions at the same time. A dry-erase page protector makes that practice easy.
