A Few Tips
S has two curves going in opposite directions. It’s obvious to us, but it’s a funny one for little learners. It starts at the top curving left, then reverses and curves right at the bottom. Kids who rush end up with something that looks like a backwards S or a wiggly line. Slow, deliberate tracing of the dashed outlines is the best way to internalize the shape.
Backwards S is very common. This is called letter reversal. Many kids form the mirror image. It does not indicate a learning issue – it just means the directionality needs more practice. Be patient and offer lots of attempts practice and learn. It will come.
Use sidewalk chalk outside. Draw the dashed letter outlines large on pavement and have your child trace with chalk. Gross motor practice with the same letter formation carries over to fine motor work on paper.
