Letter R tracing worksheet shows "Rr," a robot illustration to color, and "robot" label. It includes tracing lines for both uppercase and lowercase R to help kids practice handwriting skills.

Free Letter R Tracing Worksheet

The uppercase letter R combines a straight line, a bump, and a diagonal leg, making it one of the more complex letters for young kids just learning how to write the alphabet.

This free printable letter R tracing worksheet walks preschool and kindergarten kids through uppercase R and lowercase r with dashed letter outlines.

What’s on This Worksheet

  • Rows of dashed uppercase R outlines to trace
  • Rows of dashed lowercase r outlines to trace
  • Combined uppercase and lowercase rows to trace together
  • A robot picture to color

One page prints on a standard sheet of 8.5 x 11 paper.

A Few Tips

Uppercase R is a P with a leg. Kids who know P find R much easier. Here’s why: Form the tall line and the upper bump exactly like P, then add a diagonal leg kicking down to the right from where the bump meets the tall line.

Take a break after each row. Breaks are essential for kids who lose focus quickly. And it’s rare to find kids who don’t do this! Completing one row of uppercase, setting the sheet aside, and coming back later is more effective than pushing through the whole page at once.

The diagonal leg on uppercase R matters. It should start at the midpoint where the bump ends and angle down to the bottom right. Kids who start the leg too high or too low produce something that reads more like P or K.
