Number three tracing worksheet

Number 3 trips up a lot of beginners because the two curves look similar but face the same direction.

It’s also unlike some letters kids may have learned, where curves often pair as mirror images.

This free printable number 3 tracing sheet gives preschool and kindergarten kids a stroke-order guide that makes the formation clear, plus three cute hedgehogs to count and color.

What’s on This Sheet

  • A large number 3 with numbered stroke-order guides
  • Three hedgehog illustrations for counting
  • Two rows of dashed number 3 outlines to trace
  • Color 3 circles activity
  • Circle every number 3 recognition activity

Print your worksheet on regular 8.5″ x 11″ printer paper.

A Few Tips

“Around the tree, around the tree, that’s the way to make a three!”. The stroke guide shows starting at the top right, curving left to the middle, then curving left again to the bottom. Both bumps face the same direction, which is what kids often get wrong. Use the above rhyme to emphasize the repeated movement.

Count the hedgehogs before tracing. Three is an important milestone in early counting — it is the largest number most preschoolers can recognize instantly without counting. Use the illustration to build that automatic recognition alongside the writing practice.

3 is often written backwards at first. If your child keeps reversing it, don’t worry. Just focus on the starting point, the top right, rather than the shape as a whole. Correct starting position will eventually lead to to correct direction for most kids.
