Need a red, white and blue dessert to share for the 4th of July, Memorial Day or another celebration? These patriotic Oreo balls are a bite-size treat that’s perfect for a picnic or a party!
Oreo balls are one of the first desserts my kids made by themselves, with just a little help from their aunt. They were about 5 and 6 years old at the time, and they were so proud of themselves for creating something so tasty almost entirely on their own.
The only reason I shared that story is to let you know how easy it is to make this recipe. It’s just a combination of oreos and cream cheese that’s dipped in the melted candy of your choice. Choosing red, white and blue candy melts makes these a wonderful patriotic dessert.
There are three reasons I love this recipe.
1. It’s not just for patriotic holidays and parties.
The red, white and blue is fun, but there are so many other possibilities!
You can adapt the colors to any mood or celebration. So the recipe you’re reading to day is for patriotic Oreo balls in shades of classic red, white and blue.
Do the same thing with red, pink and white candy melts for Valentine’s Day. Or red, green and white for Christmas. I’d go on, but I know you get it.
2. It’s only 3 ingredients.
Oreos, cream cheese and candy melts. Sprinkles are optional, but always recommended for maximum fun.
3. It’s a no-bake dessert
The no-bake dessert hits different when we’re talking about a 4th of July treat! Not having to turn your oven on in the middle of summer can be a priceless gift.
The hardest part of making Oreo balls
There are two parts that might not go smoothly the first few times you make this recipe.
1. Dipping in candy melts
The first part that’s hard for me is dipping the shaped truffle in the candy melts. I’ve made this recipe multiple times and I always have to fish at least one ball out of the melted candy after I dropped it.
2. Decorating
The other step that can be tricky is decorating the balls after they’ve been dipped. Personally, I have neither steady hands nor an eye for detail. Which is why I stick to very simple designs like drizzles or sprinkles.
If you’re more capable than me, I encourage you to bedazzle your truffles to the extent of your abilities. And send me pictures. Seriously. My email address is below.
Storing oreo balls to keep them fresh
This recipe is best served within a day or two after making them, but the hardened candy shells do a pretty great job of keeping the inside of the truffle fresh.
The best way to keep your truffles fresh is to keep them cold and dry. Which means airtight containers and your refrigerator or freezer.
Use the instructions below to help them last as long as possible.
Refrigerator: You can store your truffles in an airtight container in the refrigerator for about a week. This will keep them from getting too soft or melty.
Freezer: Refrigerate your oreo balls until they’re firm, then transfer them to a ziplock freezer bag, separating layers with parchment paper.
I like to put the sealed bag into an airtight container. I think it helps, but it’s not required. You can store them like this in the freezer for up to 3 months. Just move them from the freezer to the refrigerator about 3 hours before you want to serve them.
Ingredients
It doesn’t really get any easier than these ingredients!
Oreos and cream cheese are the stars of this recipe. The rest is your choice.
We’re using red and blue candy melts because this recipe is for a patriotic theme. Feel free to swap those colors out for any others.
You can also use all vanilla candy melts and oil-based food coloring to customize your colors.
Or just stick to Ghirardelli melting wafers in various chocolates. You can’t go wrong.
Equipment
I used the following items to make my truffles. You can completely copy my method, or feel free to use what you have and make it work.
- Parchment paper
- Baking sheets
- Hand mixer
- Food processor or blender*
- 1.5″ cookie scoop
- Pastry bags
Don’t fret if you don’t have a food processor. You’ll need more time, but you can put the cookies in a ziplock bag, put a towel over it and smash them with a rolling pin.
If you do it this way, the cream filling will make all the crumbs stick to the inside of the ziplock bag. You can turn the bag inside out and scrape it with a spatula, or try this method:
Twist the cookies apart and scrape filling into a bowl with the cream cheese before crushing them by hand.

You’ll find the easiest instructions for simple oreo balls with white drizzle or white sprinkles below.
You can also change the recipe so you dip the the truffles in white chocolate and drizzle with red and blue melting candy. Or use different sprinkles for a fun change.

Red White and Blue Oreo Balls
4th of July Oreo balls are the perfect no-bake patriotic treat! With just Oreo cookies, cream cheese and melted chocolate or candy, you'll have a delicious dessert for all your celebrations.
Ingredients
- 1 lb 2.12 oz family size Oreo cookies
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened to room temperature
- 12 oz red candy melts
- 12 oz blue candy melts
- 1/2 cup Ghirardelli white melting wafers
- Sprinkles
Instructions
- Put the cream cheese in a bowl and use a hand mixer on medium to mix until smooth and fluffy.
- Place the cookies in the bowl of the food processor and pulse to fine crumbs. Pour the cookie crumbs over the cream cheese and mix with a spatula until it forms into an evenly combined ball.
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, then use a cookie scoop to portion out the truffle mixture into a one-inch ball. Use your hands to shape the ball, then set it on the parchment. Repeat until you've used up all of the cream cheese and Oreo cookie mixture.
- Place the baking tray in the freezer for at least 20 minutes, up to 2 hours.
- Line another baking sheet with parchment and melt one color of the candy melts according to the package directions.
- Use a fork to dip one ball completely into the melted candy. Lift the fork and hold it over the bowl or pan so excess candy drips off. Place the ball on the fresh baking sheet and top with sprinkles, if desired.
- When you're ready to move on to the second color, refrigerate the dipped truffles to set the candy coating.
- Repeat the steps with the second color of candy melts.
- Place 1/2 cup of white melting wafers into a microwave-safe piping bag. Microwave the bag in 20 second intervals until melted. Squeeze intermittently for even melting.
- Cut the tip off the end of the piping bag and drizzle white candy over the dipped truffles. Top the drizzle with sprinkles, if desired.
- Return the Oreo balls to the refrigerator for at least 10 minutes to set the drizzle.
- Keep the truffles refrigerated until they're ready to eat.
