This Letter X tracing worksheet features uppercase and lowercase X, a cartoon child holding an x-ray, plus tracing lines for practicing writing both forms of the letter.

Free Letter X Tracing Worksheet

The letter X is one of the least common letters in our language, but it’s one of the most fun for little kids to learn how to write.

This free printable letter X tracing worksheet covers uppercase X and lowercase x with dashed letter outlines. The dashes show two crossing diagonals come together to make a clean, balanced letter.

What’s on This Worksheet

  • Rows of dashed uppercase X outlines to trace
  • Rows of dashed lowercase x outlines to trace
  • Combined uppercase and lowercase rows to trace together
  • A pixture of an x-ray to color

This one page worksheet prints on a standard 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper.

A Few Tips

X is two diagonal lines crossing in the middle. First diagonal from top left to bottom right, second diagonal from top right to bottom left. The crossing point should land right in the center – kids who rush often cross too high or too low, making it look lopsided.

X is one of the easier letters for left-handed writers. The diagonal strokes feel natural in either hand, with no directional bias the way there is with letters like S or C. If you have a left-handed child who has been struggling, X is a good confidence builder.

Use a window as a light box. Tape the tracing worksheet to a window on a sunny day and tape a blank sheet on top of it. Your child traces the letter through the paper using the light coming through. This is fun for kids who need more contrast.
