Tips for teaching this number
“Down and across and down once more. That’s how we make the number 4“. That number formation rhyme follows the stroke guide and gives kids a fun way to remember how to write a four. It helps them separate the digit into three separate, deliberate writing strokes.
Count the dogs first. Four is right at the edge of what most preschoolers can recognize without counting one by one. Use the illustration to practice by sight: cover and uncover the group of 4 dogs and see if your child can say “four” without counting each dog.
The crossbar placement matters. The horizontal line should sit about halfway up the number, with the tall right side extending above and below it. Kids who place the crossbar too high or too low produce a number that is hard to read. The dotted line and arrows show the correct position.
