Number 8 tracing worksheet: Worksheet for the number 8—trace eight, count 8 snails, color 8 circles, and circle every number 8 among other numbers.

Free number eight tracing worksheet

Number 8 is one of the most challenging single digits for children to write well. The stacked loops require lots of control for kids who are learning to write. This free printable number 8 tracing sheet gives preschool and kindergarten kids a stroke-order guide to follow, plus an exercise to learn their numbers when they count and color eight snails.

What’s on this sheet

  • A large number 8 with a numbered stroke-order guide, dashed lines and arrows.
  • Eight snail illustrations for counting and coloring
  • Two rows of dashed number 8 outlines to trace
  • Color 8 circles activity
  • Circle every number 8 recognition activity

Print this PDF on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.

A few tips

“Make a snake but do not wait. Climb back up to make an eight!” Use the rhyme as you show how to make the number, then repeat it as your child traces the big number eight at the top of the worksheet. Be mindful of the continuous line instead of drawing two stacked circles.  The continuous stroke approach produces a cleaner result.

The top loop should be smaller than the bottom loop. This is a detail that can make an 8 readable. The dashed outlines on this worksheet model the correct proportions. Encourage kids to follow them closely rather than freeforming the shape.

Eight snails is a lot to count, especially for early preschool. For numbers this large, organized counting (pointing to each animal in a left-to-right, row-by-row order) is a skill worth practicing along with the writing.
