A Few Tips
Uppercase Q is O with a tail. Form the circle first, then add a short diagonal tail inside the lower right of the circle. Kids who add the tail before closing the circle end up with a lopsided Q. Circle first, tail second.
Lowercase q is one of the p/q/b/d family. The round part sits on the left and the tall line drops to the right below the baseline. A simple way to remember: q always has its tall line pointing toward the u that almost always follows it in English words.
Q is a great opportunity to talk about qu together. In English, q is almost always followed by u. Pointing that out while practicing makes the letter more memorable and starts building a useful phonics rule at the same time.
