The Angry Birds Movie 2: Quotes from Rachel Bloom and Jason Sudeikis
I few months ago, I headed to LA for the junket for The Angry Birds Movie 2. I screened the movie – read my The Angry Birds Movie 2 parent review – made Angry Birds fan art with the director and had some great interviews with the talent!
One of those great interviews was sitting down with Rachel Bloom and Jason Sudeikis, the voices of Silver and Red, and talk to them about all things Angry Birds!
The Angry Birds Movie 2 is in theaters everywhere! Get your tickets and local showtimes here!
About Red and Silver, the characters voiced by Sudeikis and Bloom:
Jason Sudeikis returns to The Angry Birds Movie 2 to voice Red, the role he originated in the original Angry Birds film.
Red is the leader of the birds. He’s strong-willed, outspoken and decisive. He’s known to be grumpy with an angry temper, but he’s loyal, helpful and has a good heart.
Rachel Bloom is the voice of Silver, a new character in The Angry Birds Movie 2.
Silver is a brilliant, award-winning, engineering genius bird. She’s Chuck’s sister, and her calculating mind saves the birds more than once in the movie.
Silver and Red have a complicated relationship. They meet at a speed dating event where Silver rejects Red. In the end, however, Silver and Red have figured out that they’re better as a team, and they end the movie as good friends.
The Angry Birds Movie 2: Quotes from Rachel Bloom and Jason Sudeikis
Rachel Bloom On Silver being an engineer in The Angry Birds Movie 2:
It’s rare to see female animated characters who are in STEM fields. I feel like, if a little girl out there, or a little boy, can see Silver and think, ‘I can be an enginner.’
We need more women in STEM, so that is really exciting to me.
Rachel Bloom on voicing a character in a movie versus a television show:
It’s a lot of work. Muppet Babies and My Little Pony were just one episode each. But this, The Angry Birds Movie 2, is day after day.
With a movie, you also see how the plot evolves, and you’re more intimately involved in the creative process.
Jason Sudeikis and Rachel Bloom on recording their own parts for The Angry Birds Movie 2:
Rachel Bloom: It’s weird, because there’s such good chemistry between the characters in The Angry Birds Movie 2, but we’re never in the same room for recording.
Jason Sudeikis: It feels like a magic trick! I have old friends in this movie but this, press time, is the only time we get to hang out with our castmates.
And on the magic of animation:
Jason Sudeikis: It’s remarkable what they do. I like to think we’re part of the talent, but it’s mostly the people who know how to make it sound like that.
Rachel Bloom: They say, ‘Oh, you brught such life to the character,’ which I have to believe as an actor or my world will crumble…
Jason Sudeikis: That we definitely do!
Rachel Bloom: But when you look at that animation, and also the way it was edited…you see how they put it together and you’re like, ‘Oh, wow!’
On how they perform their voice work:
Jason Sudeikis: I don’t know about you, but I say other people’s lines in different voices.
Rachel Bloom: Really?
Jason Sudeikis: Yeah. It gives it the back and forth…
Rachel Bloom: That’s so funny. I just have them read with me as I’m saying mine.
Jason Sudeikis: Which makes total sense. I do it to make it flow better in my head. It’s not like I do it all out. I say it so I can get the timing…It’s like playing make-believe.
Rachel Bloom discussing how gender comes into The Angry Birds Movie 2:
I think this film is about cutting through toxic masculinity and the way we train men and boys to feel their emotions with compassion and empathy.
Not saying, “Oh, Red, you’re angry. Stop being angry and just be nicer.” No. It’s saying, “Hey, you seem sad right now. It’s ok to feel those feelings.”
I think it’s a really good exploration of when anyone lashes out.
On The Angry Birds Movie 2 and feelings:
Jason Sudeikis: It’s ok to be grumpy. The last movie was more about your own anger and using it to motivate action in your community, your nest, if you will. How do you go beyond that when that anger is then keeping you from an ultimate goal or love connection?
Rachel Bloom: Red’s issues come from a deep fear of abandonment. Radical compassion and empathy are so cool for little boys to see in a male character. “When I’m feeling threatened, it’s ok to feel scared.”
It’s a good lesson, to stay with the angry people. To keep asking and trying.
On how Rachel Bloom relates to the movie:
I really relate to the scene where there’s the fear of what will happen if there is a truce?
I actually really relate to Red’s fear, I think we all do. Abandonment and “I’m gonna let everyone down and everyone is counting on me, what happens if I fail?” That’s so human.
