This Letter D tracing worksheet features uppercase and lowercase "Dd," a drawing of a duck, and three lines for tracing practice. The word "duck" appears beneath the illustration for added recognition.

Free Letter D Tracing Worksheet

The lowercase letter D trips up a lot of kids when they’re learning how to write. Not because it’s hard to form, but because it looks so much like a lowercase letter b when reversed. That’s ok! It’s why we have practice sheets like this one to use.

This free printable letter D tracing worksheet gives preschool and kindergarten kids dashed letter outlines for both uppercase D and lowercase d, building the muscle memory that makes reversals less likely over time.

What’s on This Worksheet

  • Rows of dashed uppercase D outlines to trace
  • Rows of dashed lowercase d outlines to trace
  • Combined uppercase and lowercase rows to trace together
  • A picture of a duck to color

This one page sheet prints on 8.5 x 11 printer paper.

A Few Tips

Letter reversal of d and b is common. Lowercase d and b are mirror images of each other, and mix-ups are completely normal through about age 7, and sometimes even longer.

First the round part, then the tall part Since lowercase d starts with the round part first (like a C), then adds the tall line on the right, use the hint “First the round part, then the tall part” as a cue to help your kids lock in the d.

Laminate it. Repetition is the way to correct reversals. The more times they form it correctly, the more automatic it becomes. A sheet protector and dry-erase marker makes that easy.

Try it in different materials. Tracing a d in a sand tray or with a finger on a bumpy surface before pencil work helps the formation stick in physical memory, not just visual memory.
