Free Letter Z Tracing Worksheet

Letter Z is the finish line of the alphabet, and kids who are learning to write letters usually feel a real sense of accomplishment when they get here.

This free printable letter Z tracing worksheet covers uppercase Z and lowercase z with dashed letter outlines that make the three-part zigzag easy to follow.

What’s on This Worksheet

  • Rows of dashed uppercase Z outlines to trace
  • Rows of dashed lowercase z outlines to trace
  • Combined uppercase and lowercase rows to trace together
  • A picture of a zebra to color

This worksheet prints on a standard sheet of printer paper (8.5″ x 11″).

Tips for teaching how to write the letter Z

Z is three parts: across, diagonal, across. Line across the top, diagonal down to the bottom left, line across the bottom. The diagonal should go all the way from the top right corner to the bottom left corner. Making it too shallow ends up looking more like a wonky N.

Lowercase z is the same pattern, smaller. Same three parts, just sized to sit between the baseline and the midline. Because it is small, the diagonal needs to be deliberate or it doesn’t work.

Z is a great letter to end on. After working through all 26 letters, finishing with Z gives kids a clear sense of completion. Consider printing the full A-Z set and letting your child check off each letter as they master it — turning it into a project makes the whole alphabet feel achievable rather than overwhelming.
