Rainbows are known to symbolize a variety of different meanings:
Hope and renewal – Since they’re often seen after a storm, rainbows are often used to show the promise of better days ahead.
Peace – Again, since they’re viewed post-storms, you’ll find that rainbows can indicate serenity and calm after a turbulent period.
Diversity – With their full spectrum of colors, rainbows are often associated with inclusion, pride and acceptance, especially surrounding the LGBTQ+ community.
Beauty and Wonder – As naturally occurring objects that occur when many factors align, rainbows remind us of the magic and awe that the world can inspire.
Transformation – The formation of a rainbow from light and water can symbolize transformation and the change from one state to another.
With all of these different meanings, a rainbow baby shower can be a fitting theme for any parent, and I’m here to show you how it’s done!
About rainbow baby showers
First, the big question is:
Why would you not have a rainbow themed baby shower?
If you’re not familiar with the term rainbow baby, then you’re likely confused by why a rainbow theme might bring up questions.
A rainbow baby is a baby born after a previous loss due to miscarriage, stillbirth or neonatal complications. The concept is intended to symbolize the hope and joy new parents feel after a period of darkness and grief. The rainbow that appears after the storm.
There was a short amount of time where a rainbow theme for a baby shower felt like it should be reserved for those parents expecting a rainbow baby.
Are rainbows off-limits for non-rainbow babies?
I’ve done a lot of unofficial research and it turns out that rainbows are for everyone. Since they symbolize so many things in addition to pregnancy after loss, there’s no reason to make them off-limits for anyone.
In short, do what makes you happy.
What if you want to have a rainbow themed shower for your rainbow baby?
First, I’m so sorry for your loss, and I’m so happy you’re expecting a rainbow baby of your own. Of course you can have a rainbow theme for your shower!
If you want everyone attending to celebrate your rainbow baby and all that it means, you can communicate that on invitations with wording like, “Celebrate our rainbow baby!” or “We’re so excited for Jane’s rainbow baby!” Using that possessive phrasing will go a long way to convey the meaning and significance of your baby shower.
