I have a friend who’s a huge, huge Rae Dunn fan. She goes “Rae Dunning” at TJ Maxx and Homegoods at least once a week. Her collection of cream-colored ceramic goods with tall, black letters is artfully displayed throughout her home.
But one thing about this friend – she’s not a snob. She loves the look of Rae Dunn items because she thinks they’re cute and sweet. Not because of the brand behind them.
So this friend also really, really likes homemade Rae Dunn inspired projects. And she loves when I make them for her as gifts!

These are the items you’ll need to make your own ornaments:
- Flat white ornaments
- Black permanent vinyl (buy Cricut vinyl or get Orcal vinyl)
- Weeding tool (from Cricut or generic set)
- Transfer tape (from Cricut | from Amazon)
- Red and green ribbon
- Scissors
- Optional Poinsettia embellishments (or other Christmas dimensional stickers with about a 1″ diameter)
Rae Dunn Ornament Directions
1. In a new Cricut Design Studio project, insert a text box and type your desired word. Highlight the word and select The Skinny font from your system fonts.
2. Measure your ornament and adjust the size of your text to fit with at least a 1/4 inch margin around all sides.
3. Send the file to your Cricut and cut the letters from black permanent vinyl.
4. Weed the extra vinyl away from the backing so you’re left with just the letters. Cut out transfer tape to fit and press over the top, non-sticky side of the letters, then lift the letters off the backing.
5. Align the vinyl to your ornament, then press the transfer tape firmly to the surface. Swipe slowly over the letters with a vinyl scraper or a credit card to make sure the vinyl is stuck to the ornament, then pull the transfer tape away.
5. Attach a decorative embellishment with hot glue, if desired.
6. Cut a 6-inch length of ribbon, knot it in a loop and feed the looped end partially through the hole in the ornament. Take the knotted end and push it through the ribbon loop. Pull the knot so the loop tightens around the ornament.
