Easy Baby Food: 10 Useful Everyday Tools for Making Homemade Baby Food

how to make homemade baby food

When I was pregnant, I remember excitedly talking to another pregnant mom about homemade baby food and how great it would start making baby food at home. A few months after we both became new moms, I brought up the subject of making baby food at home and she told me that she just couldn’t handle the thought of making her son’s food along with everything else that came with caring for a baby.

I totally understand that having a new baby means having your hands full, but there was no convincing her that making homemade baby food is easier than you think! This is the first article showing you the many different ways you can make baby food for your little one at home. By the end of the series, I’m hoping you’ll not only be amazed at the variety of foods you can make for your baby, but also at the variety of ways you can make it!

If you like this post, please share it with others by pinning it on Pinterest.

If you’re looking for easy baby food recipes, they’re all easy!   Just puree and mash individual fruits and vegetables and mix them together. I have more advice coming up in a future article, but, really, you can’t go wrong if you stick with basic fruits and vegetables.

You’ll need a few tools for any method of baby food-making, but you probably already have at least a few of them in your home (you have a fork, right?). I strongly advise you to keep your budget in check before you purchase any specialty supplies for making baby food. After all, one really good reason to make homemade baby food is to save money!

If you do want or need to purchase something, look at the value it might add beyond the baby food years. For example, I have a nice food processor that I used to make baby food, and I still use it all the time for cooking prep and baking! It was an investment, but definitely worth it for the mileage I’ve gotten out of it. On the other hand, if you spring for a Beaba Babycook or other baby food maker you likely won’t use it after your little one starts eating regular table food.

Here are 10 useful tools you can use to make baby food at home:

Basic Tools: How to Cook Homemade Baby Food

  1. Basic saucepan :: almost every fruit or vegetable you serve to your baby needs to be cooked. A no-frills saucepan with a 1.5 to 2-quart capacity is step #1 in basic baby-food making.
  2. Slow cooker or Crock Pot :: Slow cookers are perfect for those who “don’t have time” to make baby food at home. Most foods just need to be rinsed and possibly peeled before tossing into the slow cooker. You don’t even need to slice most of them (they’ll just need a longer cooking time). I have this 2.5 quart Crock Pot and it worked wonderfully for baby food.
  3. Food steamer :: You can definitely use steam to cook everything without a food steamer. At around $40, I understand that this isn’t the cheapest option. I just wanted to share that I used this Oster steamer because it was really nice to set the timer on it and get other things done while letting the steamer do the work. Plus, a steamer one of those appliances that can be used before and after the baby food-making stage.
  4. Steamer basket :: This is a great companion to your saucepan. Steaming is an incredibly healthy way to cook almost any fruit or vegetable, and you can even steam meat to make it extra tender. I received a food steamer like the one above as a gift, but, at $6, a steamer basket is a much more affordable option!

Basic Tools: How to Mash or Puree Homemade Baby Food:

  1. Table fork or Potato Masher:: Yes, an everyday table fork is easily the most affordable and accessible tool in this list! A fork is perfect for already-soft foods like bananas and avocados. You can also try using a potato masher or fork to mash cooked foods, but your baby might insist on a totally smooth texture. In that case, you’ll be better off with an electric option like a blender or food processor.
  2. Food Processor or Blender :: If you don’t have one of these, you probably shouldn’t buy one with the express purpose of making baby food. While it makes the process easier, Either one is a hefty investment when you should be saving money! If you have both of these, the food processor is a better option because is requires a lot less liquid to get a smooth consistency. If you only have a blender, never fear! It will work just fine to make your baby food.
  3. Immersion Blender :: If you already have an immersion blender or if you were planning on buying one for other purposes, it’s is a fabulous option for making ultra-smooth baby food. The only catch is that you’ll need to add a significant amount of liquid to get it pureed, but your baby might prefer it that way. One other option is to cook the food, add water, blend it with the immersion blender, then keep it on a low heat to let some of the excess water steam off before cooling and storing the baby food.
  4. Baby food grinder or Food Mill :: While this is a tool that has one specific purpose, a handheld, rotary baby food mill is far more affordable than other options and it’s an easy way to finely mash up baby food. One advantage to a baby food grinder is that you can make any food into baby food “on demand.” If you’re having chicken noodle soup for dinner, you can just run some of the chicken, noodles and vegetables through the grinder on the spot for baby.

Basic Tools: Storing Homemade Baby Food

  1. Ice cube trays :: If you’re planning on making more than one serving of baby food at a time, then you need a way to store them. Forget the expensive baby “food cubes”. If you want to freeze more than 8 or 10 cubes at a time you’ll end up spending a small fortune on multiple cubes. Go ahead and grab some basic ice cube trays instead; Dollar Tree usually carries two ice cube trays for $1!  Pour the pureed food in the trays and pop them in the freezer.
  2. Zip top freezer bags :: After the baby food frozen in the ice cube trays, run hot water over the bottom and pop the cubes out into a Ziploc freezer bag. You can keep separated by food type or mix them all together. If you only have regular ziplock bags just double-bag the baby food cubes to prevent funky-tasting baby food.

As you can see, you have a lot of options in the methods you can use to make your own baby food. You might not even have to spend a thing, depending on what’s already in your kitchen!

Giveaway: An Ideal Balance of Softness and Strength + Win a Year’s Worth of Angel Soft Toilet Paper!

baby dealsMy first baby was born just days after one of his cousins. While we were both pretty wrapped up in our new babies, I distinctly remember one conversation I had with my sister-in-law soon after giving birth. Both of us were riding that unique roller coaster of emotions that comes from being new parents. We were exhausted, exhilarated and a little insecure about what we were doing.

As we chatted she told me that she had recently spoken to her and my husband’s aunt on the phone. As she explained to her aunt that she struggled when her new son cried, her aunt said, “He’s still learning how to be a baby and you’re still learning how to be a mom.”

baby dealsThose words have stuck with me over the last four years. Over time, I’ve realized that my babies have taught me how to be a mom. As newborns, they helped me find my softer, gentler side to aid in soothing them and keeping them happy. As developing babies, they helped me dig deep and find that nurturing core that only wanted what was best for both of them.

Bringing Haiden to daycare 90 days after he was born required me to find strength to deal with emotions I didn’t know existed, then quitting my job a few years later to stay home with both of my little ones required even more strength to find the courage to do what I wanted and needed to do for my family.

I thought I was on my way to “having it all” before I had kids. Now, I realize I was only a fraction of the person I used to be, and I had no idea what “it all” was. Being a parent has taught me everything about what’s important in my life, and it truly has helped me find my own ideal balance of softness and strength.

What Happens to Baby and Mom Immediately After Labor and Delivery?

baby deals

If you’re pregnant for the first time, I have a feeling you’ve imagined the birth. Water breaking, labor, pain, pushing, then having a baby.

The doctor will place the baby in your arms, you’ll forget the past nine months and all will be well in the world.

Whether or not your birth goes exactly according to your plans, even if you don’t have a delivery dream or a plan for the birth, there are a few things that will happen immediately following a hospital birth.

What Happens to Baby Immediately After a Hospital Birth

Once baby is delivered into the world, the hospital staff will check your newborn’s overall condition immediately by assessing her Apgar score. If baby is breathing without difficulty, she will likely be returned to your arms and stay there for a few minutes. If baby needs help breathing, she’ll be put on a special table in the delivery room where there’s an oxygen mask and a heater to keep the baby warm.

Usually, baby’s breathing normalizes and she’s handed back to mom. In a few cases, she’s be brought to the NICU for a while for further observation and assistance.

Baby will be weighed and measured almost immediately after birth. She’ll also be thoroughly examined within a few hours after delivery.

What Happens to Mom Immediately After a Hospital Birth

In addition to observing everything listed above, mom has a few things to do!

The placenta is can be delivered naturally, but it’s usually delivered with the help of a drug called synotermetrine. This drug is administered via injection as the baby’s body emerges from the birth canal.

Mom’s body temperature will drop a few degrees. This may cause extreme shivers as the internal thermostat is reset. The hospital staff should assist you by providing a warm blanket and socks or slippers.

The doctor will examine your body and determine whether or not you need stitches following the birth. An episiotomy must be stitched, but small or minor tears may heal better if they’re left alone.

If you plan on breastfeeding, putting your baby to the breast within an hour of delivery increases your chances of breastfeeding success. This doesn’t mean that baby will immediately latch–she may not even feel like feeding. Ask your nurse or midwife for assistance, and don’t get discouraged if breastfeeding doesn’t feel natural or if the first session doesn’t feel as you expected.

Finally, it’s important to realize that human babies have a bonding instinct. Your baby can recognize your voice at birth and she can focus on your face at up to 10 inches away. If you don’t feel that bond right away, don’t worry! The most common reason for not feeling a bond between mother and child immediately after birth is simply exhaustion. Rest up, let dad hold the baby and prepare to love your baby after you have a bit of quiet time.

Baby Eczema Home Remedies

baby deals

Both of my little ones suffered from baby eczema–it’s no surprise since I also have terribly sensitive, eczema-prone skin. Being from Minnesota, we also have terribly dry winters that last for months and months. That dry air definitely doesn’t help eczema or other skin conditions!

The baby eczema didn’t seem to actually bother Haiden or Piper, so it was pretty important to me to try at least one home remdy for baby eczema before even considering any pharmaceutical or drugstore treatments.

5 Baby Eczema Home Remedies

  1. Limit bathing  ::  Baby eczema is aggravated by overly dry skin, and baths are a primary cause. Baths wash away natural oils, and any water that evaporates off of baby’s skin takes additional moisture along with it.
  2. Calendula  ::  Calendula has been used for many years to treat eczema in babies and adults. 1-4 drops of Calendula extract can be added to a tablespoon of olive oil, almond oil or coconut oil. The oil seals in the moisture in baby’s skin and the calendula heals the irritation.
  3. Oatmeal  ::  Pour 1/2 to 1 cup of old-fashioned organic oats in a clean stocking or cheesecloth. knot the top and drop it into baby’s bathtub. Let it absorb water, then squeeze out the liquid into the water. repeat a few times then let the little bundle float in the tub for the duration of the bath.
  4. Baking soda  ::   Baking soda is basic (as opposed to acidic) and it helps to balance the natural ph of baby’s skin. Good old Arm & Hammer baking soda will work for ph balancing, but it has aluminum in it, which you may not want in baby’s bath. A good, aluminum-free and organic alternative is Bob’s Red Mill baking soda. Add 1 tablespoon to a baby-size bathtub full of warm water and stir before putting baby in for her bath. If baby bathes in a full-size bathtub use 2 tablespoons.
  5. Coconut OilExtra-virgin coconut oil has antibacterial properties that may be helpful if any eczema patches are raw or exposed. You can apply it to baby’s warm skin just after bath, but you can also add a tablespoon or two directly to the bath water. Note: baby’s hair will not be clean if you wash and rinse her hair with coconut oil bath water.

My favorite home remedy for baby eczema was definitely adding coconut oil to the bath water, but, in the end, I found that the best home remedy for baby eczema was simply time. Once we got through the cold, dry winter most of the dry skin patches on their skin went away on their own.

What is the Apgar Score? {Newborn Notes}

what is the apgar score

I know I wasn’t the only brand new mom in the hospital asking What is the Apgar Score? This is my attempt to get you to be a little more knowledgeable about this important assessment that’s done on every baby in a hospital or birth center!

If you like this post please share the information by pinning it on Pinterest!

What is the Apgar Score?

The Apgar scale and score were devised by Dr. Virginia Apgar. The apgar score is a standardized method of assessing the immediate condition of a newborn baby. It’s far more specific than I ever dreamed it would be, and it’s something I didn’t know all that much about before the births of my own children.

How the Apgar Score works:

At exactly one minute and 5 seconds after baby’s birth, the doctor or nurse does five checks to gauge your baby’s overall health:

  • Heartbeat
  • breathing
  • muscle tone
  • reflexes
  • skin color

Each of those 5 factors is assigned a score of 0, 1 or 2 with a possible total of 10. This score will be assessed more than once as determined by the hospital staff.

A total score of 7 or more is deemed “normal,” and a low first score followed by a normal second score is also normal.

Why would the first Apgar Score be low and the next one high?

Everyone wants the Apgar Score to improve, and there are a few obvious reasons that the first score reflects lower numbers and the second one is in the normal range. Those reasons can include:

  • Mom experienced a long second stage labor
  • Demorol was administered during labor

If either of those factors apply, or if the doctor concludes that other factors contributed to the score difference, then that second Apgar score is considered to be the “final” score.

How is the Apgar Score calculated?

  • Newborn heart rate is over 100  = 2
  • Newborn heart rate below 100 = 1
  • No heartbeat = 0
  • Regular breathing or crying = 2
  • Slow or irregular breathing = 1
  • Absence of breathing = 0
  • Active baby with good muscle tone = 2
  • Only hands and feet are moving = 1
  • Baby is not moving = 0
  • Strong reflexes = 2
  • Weak reflexes = 1
  • No reflexes =0
  • Pink skin coloring = 2
  • Body pink with blue extremities =1
  • Blue or pale coloring = 0

It’s interesting knowing the specific signs that will be checked immediately at baby’s birth!

Moms and Dads: Did you know about the Apgar Scale before your had your baby? Do you remember your newborn’s score?

As I always say, I’m not a doctor and this isn’t medical advice. Any questions about the Apgar score or any other health-related questions can be answered by your doctor or hospital staff.
